XL2730Z strobe utility not working

Post by abrooksdavis » 12 Mar 2015, 14:56

Hi all, first time post :)

I have recently got my hands on BenQ's 27" freesync monitor, the XL2730Z.

The Blur reduction works very well just far too dark to ever want to use. I have tried to use the Blur Busters Strobe utility to attempt to increase the brightness.

Launching the program is successful, and it detects a supported monitor. However looking at the test pages stipulated in the program itsself it appears that the sliders for both persistance and crosstalk have zero functionality. I am currently using three monitors at the moment, the benq, a qnix and a samsung 3d monitor.

Do you have any idea why this monitor, although detected correctly, will not respond to the program?

Regards

just got mine from overclockers.co.uk.

I had the flicker problem but forced a 144hz profile via cru, was going to post the fix but someone beat me to it :-p

Everything else is fine, i just wanted to tune the blur reduction, but the tool does not appear to work with this model even though it is detected. if anyone else has this monitor and can varify it doesnt work that would be awesome.

Otherwise, even without freesync drivers, this monitor is sexy :D

Most likely, strobe utility won't work with XL2730Z for the same reason it won't work with XL2430T; it won't accept this type of DCC communication. If strobe phase and duty do not work, you can change it in the OSD now. You can also enable SINGLE STROBE through the monitor's service menu to unlock 60 hz strobing as well as strobe phase/duty adjustments (usually this is automatically enabled at 100hz-144 hz by default, but there may be some bugs with blur reduction settings applying unless you FORCE single strobe ON, through the service menu: See below (lower part of this post).

------------

Since you have this monitor, can you please do a BIG favor for us?

Since it's not a 1080p monitor, can you try and see if VT (vertical total) tweaks work with this monitor at its native resolution?
You will need to use ToastyX CRU and create a detailed 100 hz and 120hz resolution (you may be able to copy the existing values that are shown for 60hz; the 1080p monitors had these default values (This was from 2720Z:)

1920x1080, 100 hz

Front porch 88, 4 (pixels/lines)
Sync width 44, 5
back porch/blanking (leave default, they fill in automatically)
Horizontal total 2200
Vertical total: 1500 or 1502

Pixel clock: 330.00 (vt 1500); does not require patcher; 330.44 (vt 1502): does require patcher

(THESE VALUES WERE FOR 2720Z, 2420Z AND 2411Z! not 2730z, you will need to test values yourself!)

120hz could not use these exact timings as pixel clock was 396.00 MHz and sometimes caused screen corruption:
But using reduced timings of front porch 48,3 ; sync width 32, 5 HT: 2080, VT 1500 (374.40 MHz pixel clock with patcher required) did work.

Can you experiment and find out which VT's will work on yours?
I suggest you start at 100 hz. Set your screen to 60hz first, and then make sure you download the toastyx driver restarter (it will make ur life MUCH easier).
Then try using whatever 'default' values are there for 60hz, into a 100hz custom resolution ,then increase the vertical total.
You want to increase the VT as high as possible until the monitor goes BLACK and shows "out of range".

On the XL2720Z, once you got past the "Lightboost VT range (<1180), you would get a "out of range" error around VT 1200, BUT you would still get a picture anyway. Once you got to VT 1250, the out of range error went away, but strobing was erratic and pulsating. Once you got to VT 1300, strobing worked fine. VT 1500 (or VT 1502) gave the lowest top to bottom band crosstalk and was the most you could get (very close to lightboost quality) before the screen goes black with out of range.

If you could do some tests and check for us if this monitor accepts VT tweaks ,it would be great.

and about strobe duty/phase,
You can adjust this in the service menu.

How to enter the service menu on 2720Z:
Power off,
Hold down button #4 (MENU) for 5 seconds ,then press power while holding down MENU.
Then release. Eyecare logo will be bypassed and service menu is accessible.

(FACTORY service menu is button #3 (enter) and #4 for 5 seconds, then press power on). If this is done correctly ,the INPUT OSD popup (DVI, HDMI, etc) will not appear at all after powering on.

Here is a guide on how Masterotaku tested VT tweaks on older Z series with VT limits:
http://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=560

(I also sent a PM to you about this).

I was playing around with cru yesterday seeing if I could get any timing tighter/get a higher refresh rate. Im off work today so ill get right on it. Ill post my results in a few hours. Also I managed to get onto some sort of service menu, but no strobe option, the most I managed was disabling the horrible purple start up logo haha

** Also with me just registering I cannot access private messages just yet

I take it this is the menu you were referring to?

*Edit: I dont appear to be able to find any option for strobe modification?

Im just wondering about the VT hacks you were on about, what is the point in them? As this monitor already has profiles for 60, 100,120, 144hz?

I plugged the values you stipulated into cru for 100hz and they worked fine, blur reduction worked the same

The point is crosstalk. Those VT tweaks are necessary on the 1080p Z series monitors because without it, the area with crosstalk was very big (double image in more or less half of the screen). With the VT tweak, just a tiny bit at the top or at the bottom, depending on the crosstalk configuration in the blurbusters utility / service menu.

Since you got your monitor recently, you probably didn't compare pre and post VT tweak.

Edit: by the way, how's the AMA overdrive setting? I dont have much hope for something new and better, but I'm asking just in case :P . Does it look like this?:
Image
CPU: Intel Core i7 7700K @ 4.9GHz
GPU: Gainward Phoenix 1080 GLH
RAM: GSkill Ripjaws Z 3866MHz CL19
Motherboard: Gigabyte Gaming M5 Z270
Monitor: Asus PG278QR

Are you using the Pixel clock patcher? (Nvidia or AMD ToastyX pixel clock patcher?)
Your pixel clock is 415 mhz. That exceeds the 330.00 MHz limit.
If you are NOT using the pixel clock patcher, your VT/resolution edit will be ignored completely.

Where did the OP go?
We really need some information about the VT tweaks.
OP: Please use the ToastyX Nvidia or AMD pixel clock patcher and then try the VT Tweaks!
Your tweak probably got discarded because your pixel clock exceeded 330 mhz.

XL2730Z does not have any issues with 144hz when connected to a Nvidia card running the Nividia Web Driver in OSX Yosemite.
