[csgo]Image dark when not playing 16:9 1080p

Post by justintime20 » 27 Nov 2015, 16:30

Hello, I have a benq xl2411z and am using the benq blur reduction tool along with the 1350vt tweak. I use 2.0ms persistence and the earliest strobe phase. I also checked to make sure Im at 120hz, I use the startup "-refresh 120" in csgo too. My problem lies with not playing a game at native resolution.
I play csgo 4:3 1024x768 full screen (black bars) and I notice the image is darker when compared to 16:9 1920x1080p. For some reason, playing 4:3 causes the image to be darker than usual. The differences is noticeable. I did not have this problem before on my old pc. Any ideas on how to fix this?

1024x768 is a standard resolution that probably exists in the EDID. Check the monitor OSD. If it reports 1024x768@xxxhz, then it's using display scaling at low resolution and not running at native resolution.

If you want 1024x768 to apply your existing VT tweak for 1920x1080, you need to enable GPU SCALING so that all lower resolutions are downsampled from 1920x1080.

Strange, on desktop it says 1920x1080@60 even though in nvidia control panel I have it set to 120. I also have scaling on gpu set to aspect ratio and ticked the override game setting. In game, when set to 1024x768, the osd says 1920x1080@120.

If it says 1920x1080@60hz then it means the VT tweak is working and active. The backlight uses 60hz strobe pulse widths when the vertical total is run out of specification (this has NOTHING to do with the refresh rate--check my forum post in the general section)

if it says 1920x1080@120hz, the VT tweak is NOT active and the image will appear darker.
You're using an Nvidia card so I don't know how it operates. I think Nvidia does GPU scaling by default from default timings (not custom refresh rates) so its gpu scaling 1920x1080@default VT for you, if it says 120hz in the OSD. If it says 60hz, then it's GPU scaling the custom refresh rate with the 1350/1500 VT. I don't have an Nvidia card so I can't fix this issue for you, sorry.

Some info on VT, 60hz backlight pulse widths and why using a VT tweak changes the maximum strobe phase setting allowed.

Note: having a strobe phase setting of 100 (without VT tweak) or a few points (depending on desired strobe duty in REVERSE) UNDER where the backlight shuts off when USING a VT tweak, will improve input lag by one frame, compared to strobe phase 000.

I just noticed when I update the scaling option in Nvidia control panel and hit apply, my screen goes dimmer. I have to update/reset the resolution to make it bright again. I'm thinking that both settings aren't working together properly or something.

Upscaling doesn't work with custom resolutions, as far as I know.
The Nvidia driver is probably resetting everything to default when you try that.
AMD VSR also doesn't work with custom resolutions. If I try to use VSR to get a downsampled 2560x1440 from 1920x1080@100hz VT 1500 tweak refresh rate that exists, there's only a 60hz option instead of a 100hz option. if I remove the VT tweak from 1920x1080@100hz, then 2560x1440@100 become an option

Note: I can create a 2560x1440@100hz or 115hz manually via EDID override too which is basically monitor scaler downsampling (aka supersampling) but that's a different story.

Anyway glad you worked it out.
