Benq xl2420z Windows 10 question

Post by smbrm » 25 Jul 2016, 00:43

I have been reading that there is an access to scaling issue with the 2420z monitor whe. Used with Windows 10. Apparently there is a lack of scaling options and monitor may get stuck at 60hz.
This would kind of make it useless and unable to,use its 144hz for gaming.

Been trying to see if I could find anything on the forum. Can anyone clarify this issue and point to solutions to allow full use of the 2420Z with Windows 10?

Appreciate any help.

Cheers

Monitor won't get stuck at 60hz and there is no "Scaling issue." Windows gets refresh rate information from EDID so it knows what to install. Sometimes you have old monitor drivers which conflict and can force a monitor to 60hz, this is easily solved by running ToastyX's "Reset-all.exe" in his Custom resolution utility package, or if that doesn't work, you can use Wagnard's Display Driver Uninstaller to remove old entries, and then run Reset-all.exe later.

There IS a Displayport bug with many pre-Xl2730Z benq monitors where the firmware is bugged and won't run past 800x600 or past 60hz over displayport, or the driver has to reinitialize the display unless you unplug and replug the displayport cable. This affected all of the lightboost "T" series monitors and the Z series monitors. This bug was fixed in V004 firmware for XL2720Z and XL2420Z, so displayport is working correctly now. If your firmware is v003 or older, you need to flash/upgrade/send the monitor to Benq for firmware update.
This doesn't affect the Dvi port, but still, V2 or older firmware on DVI should be updated anyway, as you are missing the 'AMA low' "feature", that was added to V003 firmware.

The Linux flasher may have compatibility issues with some UEFI motherboard Bioses, for self flashing. The official Mstar ISP device always works, however ( http://www.yoycart.com/Product/52781882 ... ment_tool/ )

Thanks for the reply. I have seen reference to V004 firmware relative to the 2411z, however I have been unable to find a link to the V004 firmware related to 2420Z? When I reviewed Benq downloads I was only finding refence to v2 firmware. Also where would we find instructions for process to upgrade firmware?

Reference was made to the issue here:

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topi ... ndows-10-/

Seems to,suggest an Nvidia related issue?

The firmware was posted in other threads multiple times.

But here:
https://1drv.ms/f/s!AkQqWXPLNfg-gVFgbSqQ9RqLAZ2A

If you have a legacy bios (not UEFI), you can flash with Linux (Ubuntu) with the flash instructions I explained carefully on page 21 of the Linux thread, but there is some risk if using a UEFI Bios. The official mstar flasher works without risk and can recover from bad flashes (software is on the main benq how-to section on this website's main page), including if you had problems with the Ubuntu method and the DVI EDID got corrupted somehow.

Many thanks for your reply, I will attempt to comprehend your recommendation, by reading the references. Please appreciate that everyone, who may visit this site for the wisdom its users have, may not share the same or even close to the same computer and jargon literacy that others have. That doesn't preclude our desire to use our hardware, but it does limit our ability to understand how to implement solutions that may be outside our normal scope. Flashing hardware and the use of Ubuntu would be totally new to me. I have never used Ubuntu and wouldn't even know where to find it at the moment. I also don't know the difference between a legacy and an otherwise bios. I do know which bios I do have.

But I do appreciate and respect your assistance, and your patience. Hopefully I can seek, further clarification if required?

I can't really help more than what I already have. I don't do Linux techsupport and I don't even know how to use it. I just followed the instructions that were written by other people and wrote out the exact commands I used on my own system. that in no way, shape or form makes me a guy suited to help with Linux issues.

The easiest way to upgrade the BIOS is with the official Mstar ISP programming device, but that's something you would have to purchase.
http://www.yoycart.com/Product/52781882 ... ment_tool/

The software and instructions are on the main page.
http://www.blurbusters.com/benq/diy-fir ... -z-series/

I cant exactly help with Linux.
I wrote instructions that worked for me and *MY* desktop (DVI port) and laptop (VGA port) flashing here.
http://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic ... &start=200

Everything else is in that thread. I can't help if something doesn't work. It was suggested if the flash starts then fails with an error, to power off the monitor for 10 minutes, UNPLUG it, then plug it back in and use a different system to try again.
Some people recently have had the DVI EDID get corrupted by using Linux to flash and again I don't know WHY it happens. It has to be motherboard or BIOS related though.

The Mstar ISP Device has already been verified to recover the EDID from any bad flash or EDID corruption done in Linux.
