XL2420Z - Single Strobe and whatnot

Post by Snoogens101 » 28 Dec 2016, 10:41

Hey,

I think I need this explained to myself in a clear way.
If I am not using BenQ Blur Reduction, does Single Strobe from the Service Menu do anything? I'm running 144hz.
I'm pretty determined to not use Blur Reduction, so I'd just like to know what I can optimally do without adding that feature, which (in my opinion) makes everything way too dark, no matter the customization.

Thanks!

Hi, blur reduction does NOT make everything too dark.

In fact, the brightness with blur reduction ON can be identical to blur reduction OFF, as long as the "persistence", or Strobe Duty is set to a high enough value. A "1.5ms" persistence (without a vertical total tweak, at 120hz refresh rate), which is equal to a Strobe Duty value of 0.083 x 18 or Strobe Duty = 018 (in the service menu) with blur reduction ON (monitor brightness should ALWAYS Be set to 100 with blur reduction on), is identical in brightness to Blur reduction OFF with monitor brightness set to 15.

*IF* you are using a Vertical Total tweak, the presence of a VT Tweak changes the base persistence values from the refresh rate default (which is usually the refresh rate divided by 100..example 120hz --> 1000 / 120 is 8.3, right? so 8.3ms, , 8.3 divided by 1000 is 0.083.
to 0.167 base persistence. So in this base, 1.5ms total persistence would be Strobe duty 009 (0.167 x 9).

Recommended brightness for normal daytime use is Brightness 20, anyway (assuming without blur reduction).

Either way, I find going HIGHER than 1.5ms total persistence with blur reduction on to be *TOO BRIGHT*, as it goes brighter than 120 cd/m2, which is the recommended comfortable viewing brigihtness.

Whenever strobing is enabled, the current to the backlight gets increased by 1.8x to compensate for the strobing.

If you are saying the monitor is too DARK With blur reduction enabled, this can only happen if you did not increase the monitor brightness when enabling blur reduction. This is where the S-switch presets (Gamer 1/2/3) come in very useful.

The Single Strobe option is for single frame strobing at refresh rates lower than 100hz. If single strobe is disabled, refresh rates lower than 100hz (60hz, 85hz, if 85hz is set via a custom resolution in Toasty X CRU) will double strobe. It has no effect on blur reduction off.

Thank you for the reply, though when I say too dark, I mean it's not as bright as Blur Off and Brightness at 100. It all seems so dim with anything lower than that.

How can you use this monitor at brightness 100 with MBR off?? That's as bright as the sun!
Like......WAY too bright!

I actually use brightness 0 with blur reduction off, which I find very comfortable. If I need more, I don't exceed brightness=20 or its too bright (this is a XL2720Z).

I don't know man, it doesn't seem THAT bright to me? It's not even that uncommon, check out some other Benq using professional CSGO players settings, they all use Blur Off and Brightness 100 as their home configuration. I just figured everyone used Blur Off due to it being so goddamn dark/dim, even when using 120hz and VT 1500, phase 0 and 1,5ms.

Im not sure.

I know the XL2720Z max brightness is 300 cd/m2 which is uncomfortably bright for anyone with normal eyes. Room viewing brightness is 120 cd/m2. I'm not sure about your XL2420Z however :/ I'm sorry. But wen I set my XL2720Z to brightness 100 and RGB 100, 100, 100 in a black room, it looks like a floodlight and that's hazardous.

It's also room brightness. In a sunny room with huge windows, 300cd/m2 isn't that bright.

But for common evening play, definitely 300cd/m2 is extremely bright for my eyes.
