This monitor might be the one monitor to rule them all for me personally. Are the anti eye strain techs the real deal or just a gimmick? Any one else sensitive to eye strain waiting for this puppy?

Im very sensitive to everything display related. Im waiting for a flicker free (no lightboost) IPS 21:9 with variable refresh rate and as high refresh rate as possible. I think the acer xr341ck checks all the boxes.
That should hold me over till OLED.

Damn, after eyeballing a couple of TN and IPS monitors I was thinking about plopping down a few bucks on an ASUS MX279H when all of a sudden Acer has to throw me a curveball. As someone who's only recently gotten back into PC gaming after a long dalliance with consoles, is 1440p/144hz the kind of thing I could take advantage of with a single MSI GTX 970? I know it can get reasonable framerates at 1440p and I'm assuming G-Sync will help with that, but I'm still not sure whether this is worth waiting (and selling my soul) for or if it's only going to benefit someone with a truly beefy setup.

Not in every game... and that is where VRR (variable refresh rate) comes into play. In games like CSGO where you totally can play at 1440p with 250+ FPS, GSync and FreeSync is more or less useless. Actually a hindrance, technically. The input lag post on GSync shows what happens with CSGO plays above 140fps with GSync enabled. (Hint: Lag).

With that said, Gsync is the best thing to come to monitors and games in a long time. My Single GTX 780Ti cant play BF4, Metro Last Light, Dying Light or any of those kinds of games at 144hz all the time (especially not maxed out). GSync takes up that slack and then you cant tell what FPS you are actually running. The simple fact of the matter is that anywhere between 50fps and 144fps feels pretty much the same. It's amazing, really.

I'm not able to go back to a static refresh rate monitor. It's akin to going from an SSD boot drive back to an old mechanical. The mechanical people dont know what they are missing, and the SSD people would never do it unless they had to.

Well that sounds pretty badass then. I suppose I'll have to postpone my upgrade at least until we get some pricing/early reviews. In the meantime, time to start putting in some OT and pinching those pennies.

I completely disagree with that statement.

Personally I don't get that feeling until about 85 fps. Framerates below that are a huge improvement over a static refresh rate monitor of course but I can still see the individual frames clearly.

well it depends on the game and what the person is used to obviously. for me ~80 is around the boundary value

Oh sure. Around 75ish is about where I NOTICE, but that's not where I pause my game and start messing with settings to get more frames. That happens around 50fps and is very tolerable at pretty much anything above that.

In most new games, there is so much engine based stuttering that GSync cant smooth out..... Really frustrating.

I actually only run into this rarely lately. There are only a few games that I absolutely could not fix such as Divinity 2 and Shadow Warrior. I suspect it's a very different situation with SLI.
