HDMI 2.1 announced: 48Gbps, VRR support, HDR

Postby Haste » 04 Jan 2017, 16:13

HDMI Specification 2.1 is the most recent update of the HDMI specification featuring advanced features for the HDMI eco-system. It supports a range of Higher Video Resolutions and refresh rates including 8K60 and 4K120, Dynamic HDR, and increased bandwidth with a new 48G cable. Version 2.1 of the HDMI Specification is backward compatible with earlier versions of the Specification.

HDMI Specification 2.1 Feature Highlights Include:

- Higher Video Resolutions support a range of higher resolutions and faster refresh rates including 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz for immersive viewing and smooth fast-action detail.

- Dynamic HDR ensures every moment of a video is displayed at its ideal values for depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and wider color gamuts—on a scene-by-scene or even a frame-by-frame basis.

- 48G cables enable up to 48Gbps bandwidth for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 feature support including 8K video with HDR. The cable is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI Specification and can be used with existing HDMI devices.

- eARC supports the most advanced audio formats such as object-based audio, and enables advanced audio signal control capabilities including device auto-detect.

- Game Mode VRR features variable refresh rate, which enables a 3D graphics processor to display the image at the moment it is rendered for more fluid and better detailed gameplay, and for reducing or eliminating lag, stutter, and frame tearing.

The new specification will be available to all HDMI 2.0 Adopters and they will be notified when it is released early in Q2 2017.

I wanted to follow up as others hasn't -- but good info!

Very exciting start to 2017 so far!

I don't expect to see 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 until 2019. That is a serious transmission controller chip to develop.

Xbox One Scorpio will have an HDMI 2.1 output, support VRR:

It's coming out in a few months apparently. So, 2Q 2017.

It doesn't need to support more than 4K @ 120hz with 10-bit HDR, or perhaps 12-bit HDR (in 444), and neither will TVs go beyond that.

The new LG OLED C7 has 4K @ 120hz support too. I'm guessing via using 420 chroma, which means no HDR (HDMI 2.0a maxes out at 4K60 444 in 8-bit which is the same bandwidth as 420 @ 120hz in 8-bit, so no headroom left for 10-bit at that refresh rate).

Xbox one Scorpio will NOT have 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1. Calling something HDMI 2.1 without it being 48 Gbps is a con invented by the HDMI consortium. Just like what happened with 10.2 Gbps "HDMI 2.0".

What is your reference for 2017 LG's doing 4K@120Hz 4:2:0? I've only read they do 120 Hz at 1080p.

The XBox wouldn't have any use for it anyway. 4K@60Hz is what it needs. Any more bandwidth would be completely useless.

And no, VR on the XBox wouldn't need it either. VR at 4K is not a thing right now, especially not on an XBox.

Fantastic to know that the next XBox will support VRR.

The HDMI version of "Game VRR" is essentially a form of VESA Adaptive-Sync implementation, so it's presumably XBox Scopio may actually automatically work with any 60Hz FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync monitors. The article says XBox will work with FreeSync 2, but XBox will need to work with non-HDR HDTVs, so it will be interesting if they keep VRR enabled without HDR.
