should I cap 360hz down to 240hz for games i can't run at a consistent 240hz?

I recently bought a 360hz panel and it is great for games that can run it at that speed bit for more demanding titles such as games that would run around 240fps I'm wondering if I should cap it at 240hz when I play those titles, and if I did cap it would it make motion clarity clearer or have no difference?

Capping your 360Hz panel at 240Hz for less demanding games may reduce screen tearing and stuttering but likely won't significantly affect motion clarity. The difference in motion clarity between 240Hz and 360Hz may not be very noticeable in most cases.

from a 360hz monitor you can completely disable gsync vsync from the driver and block your fps at the desired value, normally no visible tearing

No, you typically shouldn't lower your physical refresh rate to hit a lower framerate target, which will reduce frame delivery speed, regardless of achievable framerate. Use an FPS limiter instead. I.E. 240 in-game or external FPS limit at 360Hz.

As for motion clarity, there should be no difference in motion clarity between 240Hz 240 FPS and 360Hz 240 FPS unless your monitor has better overdrive tuning at one of those refresh rates vs the other.

That said, overdrive presets usually perform best at the monitor's maximum Hz, since they were specifically tuned for it (monitor manufacturers don't really expect users to lower the physical refresh rate of high Hz monitor unless the user is playing on a 60 or 120Hz console).

Monitors typically perform best at their maximum refresh rate. As long as adaptive sync is enabled, there is no need to lower the refresh rate. Simply enable adaptive sync and cap the fps if you want a more stable frame pacing.
