What is the current state of the market? Feb 2015

Post by Steeps » 15 Feb 2015, 23:09

Alright. So I am new here. I've finally found a place that seems to have some great knowledge on monitors and technologies. I'm in the market to finally buy a gaming monitor but from what I can tell, it's about the worst time to buy (go figure).

All the hoopla over G-Sync 'allegedly' being a scam and FreeSync coming soon, what does one do when buying right now?

I feel like my best course of action is to wait for monitors with DisplayPort 1.2a to decide. I really like both the AOC G2460PG and the BenQ XL2430T (my budget is $500). I like the idea of G-Sync but I don't really want to support proprietary hardware. I have a GTX 680 so I know I won't get to use FreeSync, but it's for future-proofing in case I do buy an AMD card for FreeSync.

So what does everyone else think?

Best thing to do is to wait a couple of months.
New AMD cards are on the horizon.
New monitors are on the horizon to support them.
Nothing to lose by waiting, in this case, except time.

If you do end up getting a AMD card make sure not to get the 280x, it's the only card by AMD that doesn't support freesync because it's just the rebranding of the previous gpu generation and just happens to be the one I own. I am also looking for a gsync/freesync monitor and I want to go with NVidia because I am sick of the power communion, heat output and the noisy fans that happen to go with it. NVidia sounds amazing if I can get a super power efficient card that runs at 60c at max, and even runs even lower capping the frame rate to 135 to hit the gsync.

Ahhhh... but why does gsync have to be so expensive. i'm also playing the waiting game to see if I can just wait for the prices to go down...

hopefully soon.

Gsync will be worth it, if it really comes with ULMB for the acer IPS panels.

Yeah, that does sound like the current case. Just eager to finally buy a new one since I have the budget for it. Tired of my basic Acer 23" 60hz 5ms washed out monitor.

I'm in the same boat... finally have a GOOD comp (Gigabyte Z97-UDH5, Intel 4690K, EVGA GTX 970)... AND I have the money to get a monitor, but the market seems to be right in the middle of a major shift. The wait is the WORST, but I know it'll be worth it (I hope).

The BenQ XL2730Z is looking very nice right now. I may have to rearrange my desk to see if I can fit at 27" monitor ;). Hopefully without having to up the budget too much for it.
