32" CRT TV into a gaming monitor

Post by BTRY B 529th FA BN » 17 Nov 2016, 19:23

Can old CRT Tv's be converted into monitors, and what is needed to change the refresh rates on them? My brother has an old Sony 32" ultra mega good TV, (lol) not being used and the thought just crossed my mind about it

The resolution is too low. They are not suitable as computer monitors.

Isn't the CRT of it essentially the same thing?

Yes and no. A TV has a horizontal frequency of about 15khz, a monitor with a vertical resolution of 1024 needs a horizontal frequency more like 90khz+ in order to avoid visible flicker. IIRC, TVs would have higher inductance coils, so you can get a bigger screen without a really deep tube, but because they're higher inductance you can't drive them as fast.

A dump truck can drive around a race track, but it would really suck at it. By the time you modified it to the point where it was good at it, you might as well just build a new racecar from scratch.

There are CRT monitors than work in 45kHz. This means they support 720p@60Hz. They are expensive though, be prepared to pay at least 500$ for a 32" in good shape.
