Will 120hz laptops remain 120hz while not gaming?

I'm relatively new to computers, and am interested in getting a 120hz for native/real time 120fps videos. I'm leaning towards a laptop due to portability and it being prebuilt. However, I was wondering if it would only do 120hz in gaming to save power. If so I would buy a desktop instead. The laptop in question is the Aorus X7 DT V6.

refresh rate has absolutely no effect on power consumption. You would save more power reducing the screen brightness than anything regarding refresh rate, which is irrelevant.

GPU 3d/2d and CPU speeds are what draw power in laptops (USB devices drawing power from ports use that too).

Refresh rates are configurable. The laptop won't magically use 60 or 120 automatically even in games. Some games require you to tell them what you want, some pick up your desktop resolution (if you've set it to 120Hz then that's what the game will use), and finally some games force 60Hz with no way to override that.

In other words, it's like asking whether a 1920x1080 laptop will use 1920x1080 only in games. If you want to use that resolution only in games, you can do so. It's not up to the laptop. It's up to you.
