My old pc has an msi gtx 580 lightning extreme.
I'd like to use it with my monitor: Viewsonic xg2703-gs
My monitor has only displayport and hdmi, and no dvi ports.
Currently they're connected with a displayport cable, but there are two issues:
1. I do not see the BIOS/POST/windows boot animation. The first image to appear on my monitor is the windows log-in
2. I only see options up to 85Hz in the either the nvidia control panel or windows properties. The monitor is capable of 100, 120, 144, and 165Hz, all of which work perfectly on my new pc (gtx 970)
Are there any solutions to either of these?
I've tried custom resolution utility but it does not appear to do anything at all.
I suspect it is simply a limitation of the displayport output of the gtx 580, but I couldn't find much relevant information on google.

Re: gtx 580 displayport troubles
If you make custom resolutions in NVCP that override standard refresh rates and untick the "Show this resolution" box they will just make those standard refresh rates disappear.
But i doubt that's the issue. It's probably just DP 1.0/1.1 Pixelclock
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPo ... isplayPort
You could always just lower the HT/VT and try to push it but you won't get very far 100hz~

Re: gtx 580 displayport troubles
nop, doesn't work :/
monitor still says 85hz
the thing is... i don't even see any option for 1920x1080 144hz

Re: gtx 580 displayport troubles
I had exactly same issues with PG278Q and GTX 580 and fixed it by buying new GPU (GTX 950).
GTX580 has Displayport 1.1a http://www.nvidia.ru/docs/IO/100940/GeF ... asheet.pdf

Re: gtx 580 displayport troubles
Yet Displayport 1.1a should still support 4 lanes for 360.0 MHz pixel clock at 8 bits per channel and 480 MHz at 6 bpc.
The Benq Z series monitors (before the XL2730) claim to be DP 1.2 but are 1.1a, since they don't support High Bit Rate 2, but can still go to 360mhz at 8 bpc.
Maybe you can ask ToastyX about this.
Have you tried forcing it by custom resolutions?
(theoretically, 2560x1440@120hz 6 bpc is attainable under 480 MHz pixel clock by reducing the Horizontal total).

Forcing custom res in nvidia does nothing (just causes a screen full of artifacts/rainbows/noise and the monitor osd says 2560x1440@85Hz still. and I have it set to display scaling)

Re: gtx 580 displayport troubles
You can't create display scaled resolutions in the Nvidia control panel. While some might actually work, they are actually GPU scaled anyway. Someone created a 180hz refresh rate on a Benq XL2411Z that the drivers actually reported to windows as 180hz (so TestUFO reported 180hz) but it was actually 144hz being scaled up, which caused extreme stuttering.
This is why ToastyX CRU can't see resolutions that are created in the NVCP.
display scaled resolutions are created with EDID overrides.
Use ToastyX CRU to create resolutions.
You're looking for LCD Standard profile in Toastyx CRU, 1920x1080, Front porch (48/3), sync width (32/5), HT: 2080, VT: 1138. These are the correct timings for 100hz 1920x1080.
For 120hz use VT 1144.
If the monitor is reporting 2560x1440 that's because you're using the NVCP And it's display scaling it upwards. Most likely the Horizontal total and vertical total are incorrect or parameters don't match.

Re: gtx 580 displayport troubles
nope. still doesn't work (nvidia control panel shows the same things and trying to force a 1920x1080@100hz mode in my dx9test program doesn't do anything; still gpu-scaled to 2560x1400@85hz)
