Dissapointed with VS XG2401

I finally bought it and the colors are washed up. It just looks too bright no matter what setting I set it to (as in "gloomy", I dont know how to describe it. It's specially noticeable when you read test on a white background, in reddit for example, the greyed out text like "submitted by" , "points" etc is a bit annoying to read). I feel as if when you wake up and don't wash your eyes. My eyesight is not perfect and I have dry eyes but I remember my former monitor being better. Everything has a "bright" tint. I have tried this:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1594199/view ... t_25608340

Still no luck. I know TN panels have bad colors but I expected better, like I said I think even my old 2233rz had better colors so im pretty confused.
1080p video was also in my book sharper, and with better colors in the 2233rz.
Gaming is pretty good tho (at least quake, didn't bother testing any other game)

I tried the "Cleartext" thing and selected the text that I think looked better.

Do I have to download any drivers or something? it came without a cd.

My current settings:

Contrast: 65:
brightness: 10
User color: R 100 G 100 B 100
Viewmode: standard
Response time: advanced
Low input lag: ultra fast
"Displayport1.2" checked in "setup menu"
Everything else not stated here is set by default.
Btw, the speakers don't work (its supposed to have speakers I think?)

My GPU:
https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/R7850 ... o-overview

Is there any tests I can do to guarantee it's not bad calibration? Because im considering returning it to confirm it's not the panel. Geez just the thought of having to return it gives me an headache.
Please help :(

Try disabling ICC profile in your OS and try using a "SRGB" mode in your monitors OSD. Contrast might need to be at 50 to be as accurate as possible.

Sounds like something weird is going on since it shouldn't be that bad.

Do a factory settings reset and only turn down the brightness. Nothing else.

You might have to use a brightness of lower than 10, even.

Damn, the 10-year-old 2233rz still better?

But first, give the 2233rz a honest 'try'.
Try the factory reset as RealNC suggests.

Failing that, you can practice manual calibration using the Lagom Contrast Pattern. Adjust so you simultaneously (1) See all shades, (2) blacks are as black as possible, and (3) whites are as white as possible. This often requires adjusting brightness/contrast back-and-fourth, sometimes counter-intuitively (lowering one while raising the other, then back and fourth) -- until you nail it.

Also try sitting 10% further back away -- since it's 24" instead of 22". The TN viewing angle problem is amplified if you use the same view distance. We tolerate the TN color flaws to get the very fast speed. In general, it really does usually seem (with a few exceptions) the faster the TN, the lower the quality. It's possible that slow 3ms 120Hz TN has better quality than 1ms 144Hz TN panels.

Failing all the above -- you bought from Amazon? They have a good exchange policy, so you could swap for a different monitor -- the grumble is the shipping cost. If you're just about done with TN shortcomings -- one idea is you could go for a low-latency 120Hz+ IPS monitor -- they nearly always have better color quality. The 2233rz was an older monitor, so it has 3ms response rate. Good newer IPS has 4ms response rate so you will probably not be able to tell the difference.

But yes, give the monitor a honest try. I've seen terribly-adjusted monitors become much better after some tricky adjustments -- and sometimes it doesn't happen.

A few things to try with this monitor (taken from the Tom's Hardware calibration settings for this model):
  • Do a "Memory Recall" to reset all settings (it's the last icon in the OSD.)
  • Switch from "Native" to "User Color".
  • In the "User Color" settings, set Red to 97, Green to 97, Blue to 100.
  • Set "Contrast" to 73.
  • Make sure the "Blue Light Filter" is at 100.
  • "Viewmode" should be set to "Standard".
  • "Smartsync" should be disabled.
  • "Response time" should be set to "Standard".
  • "Low Input Lag" should be se to "Ultra Fast".
  • "Black Stabilization" should be off (should be the "5" setting,) unless you're playing CS:GO. It ruins gamma ("washed out" image) for general use.
  • "Advanced DCR" should be disabled (should be the "0" setting.)
With that being done, only adjust the brightnes. Go from 5 to 40 and keep what looks best for you on a page with a light background and black test. Wikipedia's main page work very well for this.

Also check out the settings from pcmonitors.info:

https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/viewsonic-xg2401

Scroll down to the "Test settings" section:
Brightness= 38 (according to preferences and lighting)
Color Adjust= User Color
R= 100
G= 94
B= 98
Response Time= Standard
Low Input Lag= Ultra Fast
AMD FreeSync= On
Displayport 1.2= Yes
Refresh rate= 144Hz
pcmonitors.info usually uses calibrations that are close to a 6500K white point. So try the Tom's Hardware settings first, since 6500K will appear as having a yellow tint for people not used to a 6500K calibration (even though it's the more accurate calibration from a pedantic point of view.)

Also note that on 60Hz, it seems this monitor gives out completely wrong colors. Make sure you're using 120Hz!

That is what I first did when I got the monitor. At default settings, brightness 10 or lower everything seems off, the colors are kinda dead, and not intense enough.

What contrast on the pcinfo settings? default 70 contrast with 38 brightness is annoyingly bright.
Anyway tried those settings, none of those settings get rid of the washed out feel. I did this test:

http://lightbleedtest.com/#

And I don' see anything terrible in terms of backlight bleed, even tho the status bar is noticeable how bright it looks, but it could be that due the shit angle of the panels it looks worse since if i look directly it looks a bit better.

When I turn the monitor on and it shows the "Viewsonic" logo with a black background, it has some terrible backlight, but doing the test on that site, it's I guess expected backlight bleed for such a monitor, nothing serious.

And yes im using 144hz.

Maybe TN monitors are this bad. I just don't feel like returning it only to find out it looks exactly the same. We'll see how im feeling in a couple of days. What annoys me the most is that I think some greys should be darker, for example small greyed text, or the "Google search" or "Im feeling lucky" grey buttons in the google.com page.

"sRGB" mode doesn't let me change the contrast setting. It's greyed out at "70".

That's a gamma adjustment issue.
That's the adjustment that allows you to lighten/darken greys without changing whites and blacks.

If your monitor is missing a gamma adjustment (Monitor gamma adjustment), then adjust it via Control Panel (GPU gamma adjustment).

If you're considering returning the monitor, consider IPS -- I've posted in another thread:
Chief Blur Buster wrote:The Viewsonic XG2703-GS along with AOC Agon AG271QG, ASUS ROG PG279Q and Acer Predator XB271HU is the highest-refresh rate IPS panels available at 165Hz. Of these, the AOC and ViewSonic has the best Amazon ratings at 4.5 stars each (from hundreds of reviews). These models tend to be the cream of the crop if you are panic-running away from TN panels like a scared chicken.
