Limited to 144hz on my 240hz AOC Agon 251fz

Post by vestr » 18 Jul 2017, 08:25

Hi there. Yesterday I brought home the 240hz monitor from AOC - the Agon 251fz. For me, the overall experience with this monitor is great, except for one little detail.. I'm stuck at 144hz. I'm using the DisplayPort 1.2 cable that came with the monitor, and I can't go above 144hz. I'm out of ideas.. I'm writing this in the hope, that one of you clever minds on here, might know something about this issue. I'm speculating that my GTX might be outdated - I hope not.

Try switching DP ports on graphics card.

My guess it just needs a flush, you could get the Custom Resolution package and use the "reset-all.exe" to remove all your old resolutions so it can auto find the new supported ones.

Fresh boot from complete system power off (monitor & computer), disable multi monitor, use 240Hz temporarily as sole monitor, uninstall and reinstall graphics drivers, try a different port -- these have helped.

...And this might be the problem.

I presume you're using this because you mainly play older but still popular competitive games like Quake or CS:GO that still runs at triple digit framerates on 770's.

But, even if you're playing Quake Live or CS:GO, you should know that our tests show 1000fps+ definitely has lower input lag than even ~300fps. So, it's still useful to upgrade your graphics card even if you're playing only Quake 3 Arena or CS:GO. Getting your framerates way into the stratosphere is still competitively worthwhile, and might as well, if you're needing the 240Hz support.

At 144Hz, notice how input lag keeps going down at 288fps -> 432fps -> 1000fps -> 2000+fps.

So if you spent mondoo $$$$$$ on 240Hz, why not ditch the 770 for a GTX 1070 series or GTX 1080 series?

It might be necessary anyway, since there's been problems reported by gamers trying to coax 600/700 series GeForce cards to run at 1080p 240Hz. If you keep failing with the 770, this might be needed move as 240Hz support on older cards can be quite inconsistent between brands/models.

If you can get it working with any nvidia card you should check whether it has frame skipping at 240Hz. TFT Central had issues with this display and an nvidia card:
From an AMD test system we found stable performance without any frames being dropped at all refresh rates from 60Hz to 240Hz which was good news. From an NVIDIA system we had some issues at the maximum 240Hz refresh rate (not at anything lower), where some frames were being dropped. This display is clearly aimed at AMD users anyway and so that might explain the incompatibility there for NVIDIA when you push the boundaries of the refresh rate. We've asked AOC for comment nonetheless.
And the guy in this youtube video experienced the same https://youtu.be/htpRl4FraTw?t=2m34s. Considering that a lot of reviewers don't even test things like these it's hard to say if this is common or just 2 rare incidents.

You can test it right here: http://www.testufo.com/#test=frameskipping. Would love to hear the results. That is, if you can get it to work on the first place so good luck with that!
