G-Sync Monitors and Limited Range RGB 16-235 on NVIDIA GPUs

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

It's possible that the problem doesn't occur on monitors with a refresh rate higher than 60 Hz (because a 144 Hz monitor can't be a TV).

Well, that's because the refresh rate of your monitor is set to 144 hz. Could you, please, set the refresh rate to 60 hz and look if the display is still detected as PC monitor? :)

This problem occurs at 1080p60hz resolution. However, there are games that are incompatible with any refresh rate except for 60 hz like MGS Rising or Skyrim so this issue occurs even on 120/144hz monitors.

Off-topic: Skyrim runs best at 64Hz. Which also helps avoid the problem.

I would like to add I am almost certain that my modded G Sync monitor suffers from this issue, always wondered why everything looked so washed out when a game loaded up in GSync. I really hope they look into this.

if you mean that it's fine for desktop but messed up in games, here's how to check: take a picture (i.e. real life picture with camera) when the game is loaded, take a screenshot of the game, close the game, look at the screenshot using a desktop photo viewer. take a picture of that and compare the pictures

by visual comparison to my laptop's displayport (intel graphics), i can confirm that my vg248qe gsync doesn't have this issue.

As far as I understand, Intel has the same problem...

I'm considering the Haswell i3 version for my next HTPC. I read somewhere that NUC has problem to 0-255 full range output

Intel HD graphics has the same problem as Nvidia, only I have not been able to find a solution for it (and to be honest, I haven't delved too deeply as I don't use their product).

I guess your monitor is ASUS VG248Q? :)

Also, ManuelG is active on Nvidia forum but still hasn't posted a comment here: https://forums.geforce.com/member/1734590/

i just measured the contrast ratio of my vg248qe-gsync connected to a gtx 970 with my dtp94

white: 151 nits
black: 0.15 nits

thats a 1000:1 contrast ratio which wouldn't happen if my black image was showing 16.

i also looked at a 0-255 gradient, and could see the difference between every single level.

so i conclude that, at least for my setup, i don't have this "problem"

the only issue i've ever had with 16-235 is when watching videos in browser. to get the full range i go to nvid control panel, video color settings, "with the nvidia settings", advanced, dynamic range, 0-255

OK, still no promised response from Greg or Manuel_G.

This is still on the same schedule. Driver that will introduce this feature is targeted towards the end of the year.
It took them 6 years to implement such a simple feature. Great job, Nvidia!
