200Hz Display review/questions

Alright so after my last thread asking about overclocking a display past 144Hz on my BenQ this was posted.

same brand, different seller also receives the pixel check. ONLY 149.00!!!!!

I went ahead and bought one of those monitors off ebay. I got it to do 200Hz with no frame skipping relatively easily (I even got it to do 240Hz with no frame skipping but screen went solid white after 3 minutes) (I'll add pictures later proving so)

After a lot of testing a fiddling with the monitor these are the things I found.

1. Higher Refresh rates progressively make the screen more white
a. at 200Hz it's quite bad, contrast gets all kinds of screwed up.
b. some tweaks helped; lowest possible brightness you can deal with, setting monitor polarity to - / -, changing some brightness/contrast settings via Catalyst Control Center (monitor doesn't have an OSD menu)

^even with all of that the issue is still quite pronounced compared to a 144Hz 1080p BenQ XL2420TE in terms of the washed out white.

2. Higher Refresh rates make the monitor go full white (it starts and in about 3s entire screen is pure white)
240Hz effect happened in under 3 minutes
200Hz effect happens very sparingly typically after 1+ hrs
a. Effect goes away upon turning the monitor off and on
180Hz Haven't seen the effect after 3+ hrs
b. Whiteout effect isn't related to temps (tried with a box fan next to the monitor at 220Hz which consistently whites out at around 10 minutes, also tried turning up the ambient temp by 4c didn't cause increase or decrease whiteout time)

3. Games are quite a bit smoother and the reduced input lag is noticeable in fast mouse movements at 200Hz.

*new* 4. Another reason to love this monitor; this monitor is capable of supporting a downscale 2560 x 1440 @160Hz timing.

Kinda curious if anyone can help with fixing the issues I had in 1. or if anyone has any recommendation at preventing the full screen whiteout at 200Hz or even 240Hz.

thanks for the review

I see that you are using 180 instead of 185 is it because of the white effect ? Can you post a picture of how it looks like ?
Can you post the new custom resolution you are using ?
How is 180hz compared to benq 144hz ?

Most likely scaler and physical panel limitations.

I added pictures if that helps, my 200Hz desktop was my hand shaking a bit though...

Haven't done much playtesting with 180Hz, but 200Hz if fairly obvious in the smoothness, just with a more washed out look and somewhat poorer contrast.

-edit-
I'll be posting the setting I used via Custom Resolution Utility to get 200Hz in a few hours.

I have a bit another model with DVI, HDMI, D-Sub. I didn't try 240Hz. 200Hz can work for 5-20 minutes. Same white screen and it's not temp relative.

Do u have scanlines at top right part of the screen at high refresh rate?
I'm pleased with mine monitor. Gonna sell XL2411Z.

I have very feint scan lines, perfectly playable.

Also here's my 200Hz settings as promised

Have you tried testing to see if it's a power issue? The original power supply could be having trouble. You may also have to push the voltage up a tiny amount.

It could also still be a temperature problem, but I do agree it's less likely given the evidence.

Does anyone know what the maximum theoretical DVI bandwidth could push this monitor Hz to? Assuming a good quality cable was used, that could push beyond it's normal spec? Just to see if that could be an issue of some kind.

Not sure how to test a power issue, but I doubt it. Also was able to use the windows calibrate display settings, basically when you increase you monitor to 200Hz you're also increasing the shit out of Gamma and Contrast to the point you make your contrast absolutely abysmal.

I set the gamma via the slider in the calibration tool to the lowest, and cut my contrast down to 50 on the catalyst control center menu (remember this monitor has no OSD) and now the monitor is pretty close to displaying correctly.
