Display custom frequency for 24 fps movies

Talk about overclocking displays at a higher refresh rate. This includes homebrew, 165Hz, QNIX, Catleap, Overlord Tempest, SEIKI displays, certain HDTVs, and other overclockable displays.

Display custom frequency for 24 fps movies

Post by fenderjaguar » 20 Jul 2016, 13:52

I recently discovered that 24 fps movies, are actually running at precisely 23.976 fps. Well, actually, I knew that for a long time, but it never really bothered me.

I have used a 120hz monitor for many years. And was quite impressed with the fluidity of 24 fps movies, since 24 x 5 = 120.

But since 23.976 x 5 = 119.88, there is a very small mismatch between the frame rate and the refresh. I did try creating a 119.88hz custom refresh rate in nvidia control panel, but wasn't all that impressed with the results. I figured that the more you multiplied the original 23.976, the less precisely timed it is. So I went for a 2 x 23.976 = 47.952hz, instead.

Frankly, this looks fantastic. And can also most likely be done on regular 60hz monitors as well.

I create a 1920 x 1078 resolution to force the refresh like this:

The best solution for this is to use a player which supports reclocking.
I like JRiver Media Center, but something like MPC-HC with the original ReClock tool works fine too.

You'll never get a perfect multiple of X/1.001 from a PC.
Reclocking outputs one frame per refresh, or whatever is appropriate for the source (one frame every five for 24 FPS at 120Hz) and resamples the audio to maintain sync.
If you bit-stream the audio that means you will either have audio drift out of sync after some amount of time, or the player will have to drop/repeat video frames to keep things in sync which results in noticeable stutter.

Well, I thanks a lot Glide. Reclock is pretty damn good.

The only reason for me using my ~48hz custom frequency is original speed (not that you'd be able to gauge the movie was slower or faster) and better colours at the lower frequency (I think higher refresh rate tends to wash out colours more).

Thanks again
