Acer Predator z271

Post by kandor1978 » 23 Dec 2016, 07:44

Hi everyone,

I have a Acer Predator Z35 my self and I got my son a Z271 for Christmas
I decided to test the screen to see that it works when he opens it up tomorrow
Anyway I like the monitor but there is one issue with it
I see flickery brighness when it is changing refreshrate all the time, this is at different rates depending on how much changes there is and it basically flickers very much when it reaches the under 30fps
Do you guys think this is something to be expected with Gsync monitors?
On my z35 the brightness changes sometimes but far far less than this monitor.
I would say it has about 10% of what this monitor has

So should I RMA the monitor or just change to a different model? Kind of in a hurry to do so as Christmas is tomorrow

Best,
Kandor

TFT Central did an in-depth review of that panel, and they confirmed it had a flicker-free backlight:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/ace ... r_z271.htm

So, I can only assume what you're running into is the issue described here:
https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Editorial ... Flickering

I have an XB271HU IPS display, and though the issue rarely occurs, I've seen slight flickering on load screens in games like Half-Life 2 with G-Sync enabled.

Unless it is extreme on your display, I assume it is normal, and the severity is probably going to vary from monitor type to monitor type (TN, IPS, VA, etc), and system to system. I know VA panels have slower G2G response times and more overshoot in certain transition ranges, so that could be exacerbating the flickering/brightness fuctuations when directly compared to other panel types.

Needless to say, the more the system can keep a steady and consistent framerate/frametime, and avoid sharp drops to <30 during gameplay (you can't avoid this with load screens, obviously), the less you are going to see this issue.

Hi there,

Thanks for replying to my post
Yes I think it is very real issue on this monitor but the thing is it fluctuates in the brightness in high fpses as well
My Z35 which is also a VA does maybe 10% of this monitor
Anyway I went and got a Acer Predator XB271HU and have now tested it
Damn beautiful monitor :)
I tried it at overclocked mode of 165hz but the image is blurrier than it is at 144hz (which is not blurry)

And its so nice colors

Anyway problem solved :)

Ah, good choice ;)

And yes, the 165 Hz mode has slight slower G2G response times than 144 Hz on this display, which translates to more motion blur @165 Hz, especially during certain transitions. A reason why I only use 144 Hz.

I did a monitor calibration with my eyeone pro and set it to 100 cdi which I prefer over standard 120 that seems to be for LCD displays when calibrating

Absolutely breathtaking colors, sharpness and contrast

Now I want to keep this monitor for my self rather than give it to my son :D
Actually seriously considering to give him my Z35 which is by no means a bad present haha

Will see what I do.

By the way got the new monitor also to work in ULMB and Gsync mode at the sametime

All I need to do is in CRU to copy the resolution settings from 120hz, 100hz or 85hz modes and add 1 extra pixel to vertical and horizontal resolution

Then ULMB gets activated and Gsync is also still working
But I get the flickering with this monitor to in this mode, give it a try and see if it is acceptable for you or not

Thanks for the info, I may give it a try sometime.

This is a widespread issue. It makes the monitor completely useless for gsync.

I don't think for a second the reviewers got a cherry picked model. They just couldn't be arsed utilising their mark 1 eyeballs and reporting what is in front of them.

Acer should be a laughing stock for dumping this on the market - instead they are lauded. A pathetic and amateur industry.

Outside of that the monitor is great - and it's the only option for 1080p gsync that isn't one of these horribly washed out super low gamma 'gaming' monitor - duuuuddddeeeee.

So to to hell with it, I'll have to stick with the dinky little laptop screen or another 27" 1440p monstrosity which can't even crack 60fps in Dishonored 2.

Nvidia have this market by the crypto-balls, and their onerous pricing of a technology like gsync has dumped in the arse end of the market, where it is the purview of kids wasting it on on 'esports'.

Look at freesync - 1080p IPS - it's not so hard is it. I'll pay the damn $200 if it means you produce a monitor with reasonable gamma and resolution.

I mean, a fricken $1000 gsync monitor which can't do gsync... palmed off to the minor markets to unload their inventory... why not just fix the damn thing, or be competent enough to design it properly in the first place. I'm pretty sure the design teams on these is an overburdened one man affair, and he just cranks em out to keep his clown bosses of his back.
