1440p Advice, XL2730/35 blur reduction. Best options?

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, Turbo240, ToastyX Strobelight, etc.

1440p Advice, XL2730/35 blur reduction. Best options?

Post by Coexist » 16 May 2017, 12:07

Hi there,

I picked up an Acer XB271HU 1440p IPS panel and only use it @120Hz ULMB mode. However even in this mode it is too blurry for my liking compared to my old BenQ XL2411Z
I wanted to make the change due to colours being so washed out on the BenQ. But all the reviews that said its fine for gaming were telling lies! ;)

So I have done some reading and am looking to get the XL2730. I don't want to pay the premium for the 35 model. But I hear there are some issues with the blur reduction on the 30 model?

Have these been fixed with new versions of firmware and such like or am I better off buying something completely different.
My goal is to play games like quake with little blur as possible whilst getting the best colors possible. I thought I would get this with the Acer IPS panel, but I need to go back the other way and drop some color clarity for blur reduction.

Perhaps this panel in ULMB mode: Acer Predator XB241YU

Many thanks,
Coe.

Have you adjusted the "ULMB Pulse Width" setting?
Lower that setting, will create clearer motion during faster pans, in a brightness-versus-clarity tradeoff.

Or is your problem related to strobe crosstalk (double-image effets)?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I was under impression ULMB wasn't adjustable. Will go away now and find out how to adjust settings.

I took a quick snap on my phone whilst moving mouse left to right in quake at a speed which felt normal for target acquisition; the photo shows 4 maybe even 5 images of the one stationary object layered on top of each other. Like really bad ghosting. Am i being stupid and the phone is doing this or the monitor?

Do you have an Nvidia video card, because you mentioned ULMB.
if so, doesn't the XB271HU support gsync also?
you would probably be better off just using that monitor. I do NOT know if this has been tested on the XB271HU, but on several of the Gsync / ULMB panels, it's possible to use Gsync and ULMB simultaneously WITHOUT 3D VISION 2 GLASSES, which would make buying a Benq monitor pointless. The large ULMB+Gsync thread has this information.

The Benq XL2735 is a good choice for AMD users, and you can decrease strobe crosstalk by using a "Vertical Total =1825" tweak at 100hz and 120hz (144hz won't go past VT 1253-1265) by a large amount, and you can remove ghosting to your desire by changing the undocmented "Overdrive Gain" setting in the FACTORY MENU.

However no one knows if this monitor supports FREESYNC, as this will have to also be tested on the XL2546, as "DyAc" (Benq blur reduction) is enabled by default on the XL2735 and XL2546, but disabled by default on the XL2540 (which supports freesync). Users who want to take a chance can try DISABLING DyAC in the SERVICE MENU (not the factory menu) and then see if freesync works (we need information on this).

The one big shortcoming of the XL2735, XL2540, XL2546 (and XL2730Z) is the inability to single strobe from 60hz to 85hz, like your old XL2411Z and the original other Benq blur reduction monitors can do, via the override switch.

Yes using NVIDIA.
I have tested with and without g-sync and I can't see any difference tbh. It just makes the screen blurry as ULMB is disabled. Plus the games I'm having issue with will run at 120 minimum frame rate. If I was to play a game below 120fps I would set it to g-sync mode unless its a multiplayer shooter. But in general I'm not wanting the g-sync or freesync technology.

I own the identical panel, and I too had no idea there was even a PWM setting with ULMB on this monitor until recently. But it's there.

In the monitor OSD, go to "Settings (wrench icon) > ULMB, set it to on, and while it is still selected, select the ULMB option again to get to the PWM menu.

you sir are a genius.

Been googling for an hour and all I had to do was press the same button on the OSD one more time!

Thanks, I can experiment now.

How do you find the panel for blur/ghosting? I think I may have been spoiled by my XL2411Z setup with the blurbuster utility. But the colours got to me in the end and I had to "upgrade"

well using the UFO crosstalk test in full screen mode. the ULMB on off is night and day. Almost makes me feel sick trying to look at it without ULMB, so it is working nicely.

However there is bad ghosting behind the original image (left of it). This ghosting doesn't change at all when adjusting the Pulse Width so I guess my problem is with strobe crosstalk which is not adjustable on ULMB panels right?

Gonna play some games at varying Pulse Width to see if it feels any better. But right now I'm really disappointed in this display considering the cost!

It's as good as an IPS is going to get motion-clarity-wise. 144Hz TN vs 144Hz IPS nowadays is extremely close:

Image

(ULMB disabled) Middle TN, right IPS (same panel as ours) ^

As for ULMB, IPS is going to have more crosstalk than TN at the same refresh rate in most instances. However, ULMB/crosstalk on this display is actually really good as well. This is a pursuit image I took of my XB271HU at 120Hz/ULMB a while back:

Image

That was middle-screen crosstalk; top/bottom will vary in severity.

What you're likely describing is crosstalk, and is normal. More can be read about crosstalk via the Chief Blur Buster's recent article here:
