i have that problem too, what i have found is that if i use 144hz i can't use display mode but if i use any other hz i can use display mode

Hi, I was experiencing the same error before. What I did to fix the issue was to uninstall AMD driver 14.9 and replaced it with a 14.4. Since then the display pilot works flawlessly. Do try other newer versions as I have not tested them. Hope this helps.
