Array-backlighting: necessary for CRT-grade strobing?

I recently acquired an array-backlit Vizio TV that supports strobing at 120hz. It's the closest I've seen any LCD come to CRT-brightness and motion clarity without "cheating" by doubling the strobe rate relative to the refresh rate (thereby introducing artifacts and lag). I guess what I'm wondering ...

Any really bright (> 450 cd/㎡) strobed monitors?

In other words, an LCD that can match, or very nearly match, a quality CRT in terms of brightness, motion clarity, and input response? I tried a strobed display once but returned it because it was just too dim at short (1-3ms) strobe lengths. I know there's a monitor or two that doubles the strobes,...

Re: Is it possible to get a decent 144Hz screen? (QC?)

I may be misremembering (thanx Dubya!), but I think high-hz monitors generally don't have image quality as good at typical 60hz monitors. Again, IIRC, the high-hz monitors have gamma problems and possible other issues due to refreshing at such high rates.

Re: Why aren't gamers worshipping at the altar of strobing?

I've felt that despair. But we are finally starting to get it all back. The main reason I'm excited for VR is because it forces down input lag, motion blur, and frame times dramatically. You need very-close-to or better-than CRT performance in all those categories to do VR without making people sick...

Re: Why aren't gamers worshipping at the altar of strobing?

Strobing has its problems, but I think the main reason there's so little interest is that people have adapted, without even realizing it, to LCDs in ways that make motion blur much less noticeable. One is obvious: people "jerking" their perspective using quick, start-and-stop mouse movements to bypa...

Anything new on blue phase LCDs?

Haven't heard anything about them in a long time. Have they gone the way of SED?

Re: Impossible to find a quality gaming monitor nowadays ?

Painful, indeed. Best I can tell edge-lit LCDs are hopeless if you want anywhere near CRT motion clarity and responsiveness: they're just not bright enough. I'm not holding my breath for array-backlit monitors (ala high end LCD TVs with local dimming).

Re: Over 2 years since the lightboost zero blur hack, yet...

Pretty sure I saw mark say 1000/m2 once. Something about the tube itself being capable of it but scanning/yoke/circuitry/whatever being what limited most of them to much lower brightness levels.

Re: Over 2 years since the lightboost zero blur hack, yet...

Way off on that CRT figure. Some could do 10 times that. And the Foris isn't an example of what I'm talking about. It sorts of cheats with its 240 mode by doubling the strobing, which introduces problems that further distance its performance from CRTs. I want a display that can handle fast, twitchy ...

Still no sign of brighter backlights so we can get closer to CRT motion clarity and brightness. :(
