Re: Visiting CES 2018
I agree that 16:9 is a better fit to encompass both our vertical and horizontal field of view, as opposed to 21:9 / CinemaScope which is way wider than it needs to be, overkill. This is of course assuming that you sit close enough to max out your field of view in one axis. Curved screens help for th...

Re: Visiting CES 2018
Here's the new wireless VR tech being shown at CES I heard about:

Definitely worth checking out IMO.
Latency being the big unknown.

Re: Visiting CES 2018
As you know, I'm mostly a projector guy, but I'm interested in all things VR and AR, so maybe try out the Magic Leap glasses if they're around, and any high-res / high-refresh VR helmets too. In terms of VR HMDs, if you are familiar with their current limitations, try to notice if there's any lens g...

Re: New term: "Frame Rate Amplification" (1000fps in cheap G
I own a G-sync monitor, and yes, it's pretty great, but its raison-d'etre is that game engines, having a variable work-load per frame, have variable frame rendering times, and it's better to slave the display to the GPU than the other way around and deal with stuttering and all the other problems wi...

Re: Is Local Dimming/Quantum Dots Really a Good Thing?
Unless you're in a brightly lit store or room, or are watching TV with the curtains open mid-day I think OLED looks better by a large margin. True blacks add much, much more than a brighter image. Even with lights on I still think true blacks look better, just not as much better. I'd much rather ow...

Re: Projector fans rejoice! BenQ HT2550 can do 1080p 120hz
Like I wrote in the other thread, it's likely possible to pack four independent 1080p frames into a single 2160p frame, with different timestamps, such that when the projector shows each pixel in a 4x4 block in sequential order, displaying the sub images at the appropriate spatial and temporal offse...

Projector fans rejoice! BenQ HT2550 can do 1080p 120hz
Hi guys / gals, I thought I'd share some good news I came across while digging through the Chinese manual for the new 4K (pseudo 4K or Faux-K) projector by BenQ, model HT2550 (US) or W1700 (Europe / Asia): https://t.co/mgZVUEf5oY Scroll down to page 43. It also supports 2560 x 1600, which could be i...

Re: Is Local Dimming/Quantum Dots Really a Good Thing?
I.e. is blooming actually something to be concerned about, something that would stand out and bother someone? I'm a big fan of OLED, but some pro TV reviews have shown that the higher end FALD sets achieve a much bigger colour volume so unless you're watching a lot of dark sci-fi and horror in a pi...

Re: Is Local Dimming/Quantum Dots Really a Good Thing?
So blooming is not something encountered in non-array lit panels? What's really funny is that for years "HDR" in videogames was basically just a blooming effect and a tone mapping curve, so now with FALD TVs there is blooming in hardware which does literally the same thing. I don't find it objectio...

Re: Is Local Dimming/Quantum Dots Really a Good Thing?
I meant latency vs non-HDR content. So you'd say dimming does need to buffer at least one frame? In videogames like GTA V (which I worked on), there is something similar, namely the dynamic exposure affects the current frame based on some weighted sum of prior frames (to smooth out high frequency v...
