its normal for the tn panels to looks darker on the top than the bottom

If you do not feel comfortable with your monitor, and you have a chance for replacement, just do it, dont waste your time.

Without vsync it's not possible to get truly smooth motion. Insanely high FPS can produce smooth motion without vsync, but we're talking 500FPS+ here.
