I just saw your new comment. I have the MSI afterburner OSD, it shows 142 FPS. But the actual monitor's OSD shows 120. It also shows "120hz Gsync Racing mode".

So it looks like setting the monitor to 120 fps in nvidia control panel and having max refresh rate set does make games run at full refresh. But... Actually. Scratch that. There's really no difference. This is difficult because there aren't really any true good panning benchmarks on youtube and Netflix. On youtube it seems like if its a true 1080p60hz video shot in HD, it will be smooth. If its a bad camera, the stutter might be from the camera...
