G-Sync Projectors

I have a friend who lives to play games in his home theater with a projector, but like so many he is stuck at 60hz. To date I have not found any 1080p 120hz projectors for him to try (the ones that say 120hz are really just doing stereo, not true 120hz refreshes).

Now that G-Sync exists, it has the ...

Re: Banding in 8-bit per channel color

It would allow game developers to make darker game environments (think iD Software's Doom sequel) that can freak you out at night, because fog and shadow effects with very gradual gradient colors will create banding on an 8-bit panel, and the artifacts are plainly obvious in dark scenes. With a 10 ...

Re: Banding in 8-bit per channel color

The million dollar question here is: is a 10-bit or 16-bit panel going to help anything when playing games, compared to an 8-bit panel? It's not like color depth can be upscaled; AFAIK, that doesn't even make sense for colors.

Won't make you more competitive, but will allow for better rendering ...

Re: Highest perceivable framerate?

So, there you have it. Curious, I wonder if we will find some brains that perceive higher framerates though.
That's silly. Science papers have already disproven the notion of human brain functioning on frame rates. The human brain doesn't function on frame rates . "Brains that perceive higher ...

Re: Highest perceivable framerate?

The results:
60 FPS = Obvious stutter
90 FPS = Some stutter
100 FPS = Very little stutter
110 FPS = No perceivable stutter
120 FPS = No change
140 FPS = No change

There is a potential confound here. The quake engine, as I understand it, can only render at 1000/n fps where n is an integer. So ...

Highest perceivable framerate? [good discussion]

Since GSYNC will be offering us the ability to see higher framerates now, I'd like to offer up a bit of my own real-world testing of >60hz framerate perception.

This data comes from back in my pro gaming days, when I was using a lightning-quick CRT monitor capable of 120hz and *above*. Playing ...

Re: Why do we need refresh rates at all?

Tremendous amounts of useful information here, thanks.

I heard from my friend at nvidia that G-SYNC is only capable of 8bit color right now, did you guys know that? I'm sure the nvidia boys will get that resolved though. Same with higher resolutions like 2560 and 4K, eventually.

So now I'm ...

Re: Why do we need refresh rates at all?

If this is what G-SYNC and FreeSync are doing, then color me impressed. Clearly I need to give these technologies a 2nd look.

Why do we need refresh rates at all?

New user here, love the site topic! Really glad there's a place to discuss this stuff here. I used to run 120hz as a pro quake gamer and really miss the days of silky smooth PC gaming video.

CRT's had an obvious need for refresh rates because there's an oscillating cathode ray tube running the ...
