Re: 4K isn't enough to nudge broadcasters beyond 720p [yet..
2160p is a big change. But apparently the extra 6 million pixels wasn't enough to push media companies to produce more "UHD" content, nor the broadcasters/cable companies to push the distribution of it. That may have more to do with the fact that UHD standards aren't even set yet. There are a whole...

Re: 4K isn't enough to nudge broadcasters beyond 720p [yet..
To be honest I've been planning to wait until 2015 to buy a large panel 4K TV because hopefully by then there will be an 80" 4K with actual TV features for under $4,000 on the market. But from what I've read, glasses-free 3D on 4K panels will be the next big thing at next year's CES, and for that I...

Re: VG248QE, how to tune
Interesting. Do most monitors have internal LUTs? I'm pretty sure mine don't, but they're CRTs. Another cool thing about LUTs is that they can be specified with up to 16 bit precision, and I believe Nvidia at least supports 10 bit LUT precision in their DACs. That means that if you have a 10 bit dis...

Re: VG248QE, how to tune
Why bother with powerstrip when you can achieve the same modification to the LUT by using the gamma slider in nvidia control panel/ati catalyst control center?Dustmuffins wrote:The best look I've been able to get so far in game is by using Powerstrip to set the gamma to 0.76.

Re: Challenges in building a 10 bit display (or higher)
Mark, thanks for the fantastic insights. That whole idea about momentum never occurred to me. It certainly illustrates some of the deep challenges in creating quality LCD panels. The Vpixx we have is 12 bits, and I believe is a TN panel with excellent response time. I'll probably be going to VSS thi...

Challenges in building a 10 bit display (or higher)
This is something I've been wondering about for a while. The majority of (non CRT) displays (whether for computing or video) are limited to 8 bit. 10 bit or higher seems limited to premium or reference displays. I am fairly ignorant when it comes to LCD panel technology, but my understanding is that...

yep Scott Wilkinson agrees with you:

The Toshiba L9400 series are also 10 bit.

Re: Widescreen Cinematic Displays
I would avoid buying any 2160p displays or tvs for now. They'll likely be obsolete very soon (i.e. because of them being 8 bit). Wait until UHD standards are finalized is my advice.
