Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

I don't need to have assurance that every single data point on that distribution is legit, in order to make this claim. All I need is some reasonable assurance that a subset are legit. Given that I know that flod has achieved scores in that range, it's highly unlikely that he is the only human who ...

Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

I forgot about VR. I don't own a VR system. While the VR software catalogue is looked down upon, it still elicits extremely positive reactions from those who experience it. And some tools like Tilt Brush are only possible in VR; from a futurist's perspective, 3D drawing is far better than 2D drawing...

Re: Interesting Linus video about mouse input lag

I stated that wrong. What I mean is that I consider all mechanical keyboards low end, including the most expensive and custom ones, unless the manufacturer makes claims about latency and performance. This is because good latency is sufficiently unusual that a keyboard with engineering effort towards...

Re: Interesting Linus video about mouse input lag

For lower end and common keyboards, there's a variety of published tests, but I didn't find your Novatouch in any of them. Generally, those keyboards all suck, so your Novatouch will probably not perform well either. What you say about people just being used to the delay is probably right. My Thinkp...

Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

My main focus is on society rather than gaming. Faster input and display helps everyone, not just competitors in video games. But the ultra-high end equipment doesn't seem to be useful for anyone except those competitors. 144 Hz monitors historically have poor color behavior or other tradeoffs, and ...

Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

Enough tests have been done to show some game stimuli (especially bright full screen flashes) is not necessarily identical to Olympic pistol gunshot stimuli, there is likely a fuzzy zone of multi-ten milliseconds that is poorly studied because of some amplified game-specific stimuli, and the ease o...

Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

Olympic athletes can't react faster than 100 ms under starting line conditions, only with special equipment. No sprinter comes anywhere close to the 100 ms false start threshold in a race, unless they guess. As for the measured <100 ms reaction times from the research papers, those doesn't require O...

Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

I've seen mousebutton-to-photons latency of less than 10ms in CS:GO in some setups. Older Quake can be even less, given their capability to go 1000fps+. Yes, and rendering just-in-time vsync should cut frame latency by another 30-40% of the frame time, depending on jitter. For reaction tests, which...

Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

The 150 ms results in their database are from cheating/guessing, there's no point in referencing them. Given current home testing setups, average measurements of 140 ms - 160 ms are achievable from audio reaction times. For visual reaction times with current monitor/mouse input tech, 160 ms average...

Re: Interesting project about mouse/ gamepad latency

For visual reaction times with current monitor/mouse input tech, 160 ms average measurements are probably possible, and 140 ms averages are not. I'm not seeing what current tech has to do with it. If you have a latency test program with v-sync off, high framerates, and the whole screen changing col...
