Does 8000Hz require game support?

Post by s34mh1 » 21 Mar 2023, 23:58

For mice, I have heard that some games do not support modes exceeding 1000Hz. I have also heard that some games only support mice with a frequency of 8000Hz, and for keyboards, the maximum supported frequency is only up to 1000Hz. Is all of this correct?

No, nore do I think anyone would benefit from 8K polling rate.

Some games will report input for every frame or between frames, so more frames = less input lag.
The 8KHz polling rate is kind of a weird concept to me because 8K assumes we are gaming above 1000FPS.
1000Hz is 1ms of latency, while 8000Hz is 0.125ms.
To make a long story short this goes beyond the limits of human reflexes.
Also considering the faster you move a mouse the less latency there is, the higher the DPI the less effort you need to move the mouse to reach the lowest latency so if your not running the highest DPI your leaving a bunch of latency on the table. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AoRfv9W110

Your looking for a game that decouples mouse input from framerate like Overwatch (settings > gameplay > enable high precision mouse input)
I don't know the tick rate OW uses for this setting but if its for a normal 1000Hz frequency mouse then there is no benefit to having a 8K mouse because it would be a bottlenecked to 1000Hz or 1ms tickrate.

Not to mention the overall system latency impact such as DPC, CPU Affinity, Program priority and many other tweaks that can give a bigger latency reduction than a 8K polling rate mouse.

Personally I feel an extremely noticeable difference between 1 & 8k polling.
