Alienware AW2518HF - How is display scaling?

Post by Shrib » 21 Oct 2018, 08:35

I'm considering getting this monitor as an upgrade to my 4/5 year old ASUS VG248QE. I was just wondering how display scaling felt and whether it appears any less 'snappy' compared to native resolution. And general 'snappiness' impressions are welcome too, originally I was looking at the AOC AGON AG251FZ but people seem to dislike the overdrive settings and also the Low Input Lag Mode only working for NVIDIA (fine for my card but I'd rather not limit myself in the future and I'm assuming it's a gimmick that need not exist). It's a shame that there isn't a tftcentral review for the AW2518HF.

I'd heard it touted that the VG248QE imparted some additional input lag when compared to its BenQ competitor at the time (XL2411t), whether or not it's true I don't know, I often felt victim of placebo when I tested myself but that's not to discount the possibility of a detrimental effect on my performance.

So does the AW2518HF feel indistinguishable at non-native stretched resolutions? I like to have the option e.g. for games with vertical FoV.

AW2518HF any day im very sensitive to gsync/freesync the input lag is very low the only problem i can think is the artifacts on this monitor to fix it you have to use normal overdrive i back to my pg248q cause the gsync until my vega 64 arrive

update artifacts cause sometime missing targets its even do white lines on enemies i suggest you to get the lg for the perfect motion blur even its less responsive then dell here example the problem i get even you set it to fast the white lines appears

The 'Response time' is also known as Overdrive, is a technique used to counter motion blur rather than what Dell's misleading gamer-noscope-pleasing name would imply. Most monitors exhibit 'ghosting' at the maximum Overdrive setting, which is what the monitor is showing on 'Super fast'. Ideally I would have a ULMB (Ultra-Low Motion blur) monitor, but they're expensive and I have input lag concerns (perhaps unfounded at this point in time, I'm used to trying my VG248QE's inferior lightboost). The Alienware AW2518HF is one of the cheapest 240hz monitors available and seems better than the AOC AGON AG251Fz (which was what I was looking at originally). Fingers crossed Amazon Warehouse deals don't deliver me a broken one (saved 35 GBP).

check the command from TheStrato89 "but still shows the artifacts on high / very high"

Oh damn... All games it shows this same issue? Are you running at 240hz? Overdrive ghosting will increase in severity when fps is below refresh rate too. So is the fps capped below 240hz/is game attaining 240 fps. It seems like that other people have mentioned the issue now and then now that you say. I'd rather not have to use Medium overdrive tbh.

Perhaps it's a bug they fixed with later models.

Maybe I'll try the Acer KG251QDbmiipx if I don't like the Alienware but I've not read much about it and don't like being a guinea pig.
