slowest input lag you've ever seen?

Post by xeos » 31 Oct 2020, 13:56

Question: what's the slowest input lag you've ever seen for a display?

I just tested a "240hz" display (an old LG 3D TV). I was shocked. I expected something fast, even after discounting marketing hyperbole. Instead it was the slowest I've ever seen; 136ms in game mode and a whopping 177ms out of game mode, depending on the resolution (see https://alantechreview.blogspot.com/202 ... g-and.html for full results).

Anybody seen worse?
Measure display input lag the cheap way or the best way (IMHO, but I'm biased).

Yep.

I've seen lag of 500 to 1000 milliseconds before. You really have to Rube Goldberg to get that far.

1. Use a low refresh rate such as 24Hz, 30Hz or 60Hz
2. Use VSYNC ON with a large frame queue
3. Route your video through an older laggy video processor or laggy stereo receiver
4. Then route the the video to an older plasma television with a very laggy interpolator.

If you do steps 1-4 simultaneously, it's easy to exceed 500 millisecond latency.

Thankfully it's hard to do accidentally with most newer equipment -- you pretty much have to intentionally cherrypick older tech and combine them.

Interesting, I hadn't really thought of chaining multiple devices together but of course that will take the crown for highest input lag for sure.

But, I'm much more interested in how much lag a single piece of equipment adds, since other than as a lark nobody's combining the slowest video processors they can find in search of ultra long input lag ;-) With that qualification, do you have any examples that were measured slower than 177ms?
