Disabling Write Combining on RTX 3000 GPUs?

Post by Ferr0 » 26 Jan 2021, 10:44

I recently purchased an rtx 3000 series card and I was wondering if anyone knows how to disable write combining on the newer Nvidia drivers. As pointed out in this thread, viewtopic.php?t=7323, the DisableWriteCombining regkey no longer works. Does anyone have any info on this as to why or what I can do to solve this issue?

Re-read the first post in that thread. Especially the red text where it says Disable Write Combining doesn't work on 451.48 or newer nvidia drivers

I read the thread correctly the first time and I mentioned that information in my first post. I was asking if anyone knew of a way to disable write combining without using the reg key because it no longer works.

Good question, but you can use drivers lower than 451.48, other than that I don't think the newer drivers are designed to disable write combining, but if anyone knows feel free to correct me.

You're saying I can use older drivers with the newer generation of cards(3000 series)?

Why haven't you tried that, already?

Because the earliest driver Nvidia lists as compatible with the new generation is 456.38. I assume older drivers will just not install because they won't recognize the new cards.

That might be a windows thing. I'm using 441.41 with my 1070, and a week or so ago Windows tried forcing a driver update and I think it was that driver. I was able to disable the 'Optional driver' update in windows with the file in this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/top ... 219ef19cc1

I think you and I are referring to two different things. Driver 441.41 was released in 2019, long before the rtx 3000 series gpu's released. That driver would have no idea what the rtx 3000 card is and would not be able to interact with it. I assume that they only added support for rtx 3000 cards with 456.38 and hence no driver before then should work with it on windows. The link you mentioned was just referring to driver updates which you can prevent with gp edits.

Have you even tried installing an earlier driver than 451.48?

EDIT: When I try to download drivers from the Nvidia 'Beta and Older Drivers' section for my 1070 series card the earliest driver I can download is 451.48, I'm using 441.41 drivers. If you can't find a reliable source for earlier drivers then you might be out of luck with this option. Lets hope there is a way to disablewritecombining with the newer drivers.

Good Luck
