RJ45 (Ethernet cable) to USB adapter?

Sometimes I read on here how some people managed to alleviate some internet issues that hey had by getting a LAN to USB adapter and was wondering why this would be?
My theory is that there's so much stuff in motherboards these days, combine that with high clock speeds and general interference from not just components in computers but the outside; helping to alleviate this by removing some network decoding over to an adapter might help with this, especially if you wrap the adapter itself in more shielding material, like a faraday cage.

Anyway, is there any merit to this? Anyone got any more thoughts? Anyone tried this already?
