Visible spaces in fast mouse movement

Post by Vocaleyes » 09 Nov 2021, 18:46

When rapidly moving the mouse cursor on desktop screen, there are clearly visible spaces in the after-blur of the mouse trail, which it seems is affecting general mouse consistency and leading to the prevention of any muscle memory development.

What could be the cause of this behaviour?

Hi there,

According to the reference post 1000hz polling should yield near invisible gaps, which is not the case for me unfortunately.

At 1k there are frequent and largely noticable gaps, also present at various other poling rates.
Althought I prefer using 250hz when funcionality is as intended.

Could this be an error related to the z390 chipsets?

There's less at 1000Hz, not none, and the faster you move your mouse, the wider the gaps. The comments I linked were referring to the spacing between these gaps being more even at higher polling rates, not invisible.

What you're seeing is a limitation of physics; your screen would have to reach and sustain far, far higher (currently impractical) refresh rates + framerates + polling rates to achieve virtually zero gaps with such rapid continuous movements.

So what you're doing, in part, is breaking the illusions of the otherwise continuous appearance of frames, which, even at high refresh and framerates, are finite in delivery speed from one refresh to the next.

In other words, the gaps are due to a lack of screen updates occurring in the mouse cursor area during the transition between scanout cycles, which happen pixel-by-pixel, left-to-right, top-to-bottom per.

It has nothing to do with your motherboard.

There's a good chance the Chief may chime in at some point as well for a less conceptual, more technical explanation.

I understand, I apologise for my ignorance regarding the subject matter.

I am simply trying to discover why my mouse cursor movement feels so inconsistent in comparison to how it used to feel.
Where I was previously able to develop a strong sense of muscle memory I am now unable to at all, it's an extremely frustrating issue.

No need for apologies, just telling you it's not the presence of the gaps at fault, as they're always there.

That said, if the distribution of said gaps have recently become wildly inconsistent for you, even at higher polling rates, there may indeed be an issue on your system affecting input. What "it" is could be any number of things, however, and more data would be require to narrow it down to a possible cause.

What would be the most convenient means of doing so and which information would be required?
Thank you for taking the time to assist, it is greatly appreciated.

For starters, if you rapidly move a basic desktop window, such as file explorer, the same way you're testing your mouse cursor, are you getting visible, repeated stutter? Not occasional, mind you, I mean long noticeable halts that don't stabilize, no matter how long you do it for.

There's no stutter in window movement while dragging across the screen, just to clarify, the mouse cursor itself doesn't feel like it is stuttering, it just has the visible appearance of spaces at any polling rate and tracks wildly inconsistently.
The fluidity of cursor movement feels smooth and unchanged.
