low latency mode

Post by head0r » 01 Dec 2021, 20:51

hello guys,

in the Nvidia drivers there is the low latency mode. i was always very skeptical, because i read you get less fps when you activate it and you maybe get some laggs when you put it to ULTRA. so now i want to use it but i have a few questions.

In games like CS:GO where you are not GPU bound should i turn it ON or set it to ULTRA? (i have a rtx 3080 ti + i9 9900k + 32gb RAM)
will i have any disadvantage when i do ULTRA or is it the same like ON?

in the Nvidia settings you can read, when you put it ON the prerendered frames are set to 1.
in ULTRA the frame queue is completly minimized to prioritize the latency.

i dont think im in GPU limit, so what is better then?

The next BIG question, is it better to limit my fps to 400 like much profi players do or should i unlimit it like 999?
and will 999 increase my input lag? when i play FACEIT 1on1 my FPS are like 999 with drops to 800 when i shoot the enemy, but at all very constant. when i play 5on5 the frames are much less like 400-600 and i read that stable fps are better then some drops.

So should i play 1on1 with fps_max "999" and 5on5 with fps_max "400"??
Does it has any advantage to play with 999 fps instead of 400?

much thanks guys & stay healthy!

1. I advise you to use OFF (where you are not GPU bound).
2. Always cap your fps.

Ultra low latency mode has been tested to not help in csgo or such where gpu is not loaded heavily, and some have even seen increase in latency. Most pros use off or on, either way you will probably notice no difference.
About the fps, fr33thy has tested this and seen that there is no further input lag improvement after 400 fps. So unless you have a monitor that displays over 400 hz which seems highly unlikely, go for fps_max 400. source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fiDiRBvuVI

The problem with fr33thy's testing method is that he's measuring click latency and i believe that this is the reason why there is no further input lag improvement after 400 fps. This guy does it better but he did not measure it for CS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPMHEyz38TM

Thanks for this video. I kinda follow fr33thy sometimes. Didnt see this vid before!

Some people claim that ULLM improves the latency a tiny little bit. But not anything worth mentioning.

This video also tests a lot of things regarding input lag in CSGO.

On is always better than off, unless you suffer very low fps! On equals 1 pre-rendered frame, while off like 2-3 (I think it was somewhat dynamic) which adds additional latency!

On is best in 99% cases, unless your GPU is constantly maxed, then Ultra is best!
