GPU VBios Flash

Post by FPSMaster » 17 Jan 2022, 20:51

I bought a Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti about 5 months ago. It just cost me 240€ and it performs slightly better then a GTX 1070. The only "downside" is that it needs 250W, which isn't a problem if you have a 600w PSU...

In comparison to my old Asus Strix GTX 970, it's a huge performance difference.
My old card was struggling to hold 60 fps Ultra settings in many games.
Its a great deal I' very happy with that card.

I heared the Strix GTX 980Ti has great Overclocking capabilities too. So I overclocked it. The stock core speed is 1190mhz and I managed to overclock it to 1450mhz on the core and 4100mhz on the Memory. which is insane for me...

I did some benchmarks and got a 20% performance gain in all games. No matter if I play on ultra and 99% GPU Usage or on low settings. And I got about 3-4ms input lag reduction.

Anyways, I then saw the card was boosting down from 1450mhz/core clock to 1430mhz at only 60°c or something... so I looked why and read it's the GPU Boost technologie. The GTX 980Ti has GPU Boost 2.0, and at a 65°c it lowers the voltage and the core clock to prevent from overheating. Which is completely dumb...

Why would I want to let the GPU downclock itself, even when there is no reason for it?
Without GPU Boost 2.0 I could probably get even higher clocks...

So I looked if I could "force" the clock speeds and voltage that I want. Without any automatic downclocking.
And I found a easy fix. I had to flash my GPU VBios and force my clocks at a wanted voltage. No downclocking, no wasted performance...

And it worked! After reading and watching some tutorials, I managed to get 1465mhz/core clock at 1.230v by flashing my VBios! And I can also set a higher power limit now in MSI afterburner.
Now there is no downclocking at all. It's rockstable...
My GPU doesnt go over 80°c, which is good.
Also i got a extra 3-5% performance gain and less input lag.

Anyone can do this. Its easy, but be careful how you set up your GPU Bios. If you want to force stable Clocks/Voltage with Pscal cards, there is a easier way to do it. But tweaking your Bios is very important, if your GPU has a low powerlimit. It's important to reach the best possible overclock, for any card.

Just wanted to share my experience with you guys, and maybe I could help someone!

why flash bios?
maybe just try KBOOST?

I have the same card, I can get over 1450 core clock but can't get 4000 memory clock, always artifacting, my power supply is 600w, so I am guessing it is the problem, can you share which bios did you flash?
