XL2720Z Serious Blurry @144hz Need Help

Post by JosephJZWu » 12 Dec 2017, 19:53

Hello gentlemen, I am newbie to monitors and really need some help with my BenQ

So I bought this brand new XL2720Z last year and it has been working properly @144hz connecting via DVI DL to GTX1070. While the other day, like 6 Dec 2017, I woke up and noticed that my left hand side monitor is blurry, while the right hand side is okay.

You could see that the right hand side text is clear and it become worse and worse to the left. And when I look closer, there is a white line at the bottom of the left hand side.

At first I thought it was resolution setting problems, so I tried different combinations and found that the problem does not exist @60hz, and it goes blurrier when I raise the refresh rate.

I Googled a lot about the problem and found that many ASUS MG278Q have the same problem, see http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-35 ... nitor.html

I have also ruled out the following possible reasons:

1) Graphic cards. I forwarded my screenshot @144hz and view it on my phone, no blurry is found.
2) Nvidia drivers. I used display driver uninstaller to reinstall both newest and older driver versions. Problem still exist.
3) Win10 competability. I have dual boot system, win7 also blurs.
4) Cable not suitale. I was using DVI DL bundled with my monitor for a whole year and it worked properly @144hz. Many people suggest replacing cable would solve the problem. So I went to store and bought a DP cable, tested on-site, supporting 144hz no blur. Still, problem exist when back home.
5) Reset ALL in BenQ menu does not work.
6) ClearType adjustment not work.

I have also contacted BenQ customer service hotline, seems will go RMA in the end.
Yet I still want to fix it if it is not hardware problem. So does anybody know how or anyone have the same problem? Thanks

#And my XL2720z is running on firmware V5

This looks like an RMA --

The left half looks like an interlace artifact but the right half isn't. If it was all over the screen I'd ask you to check interlaced versus progressive. But the asymmetry tells me that this is definitely not the issue. It's evenly split down the middle (960 pixels left, 960 pixels right)

It could be a loose LVDS ribbon cable inside the monitor, but if under warranty, I would recommend following through with RMA. However if the monitor were out of warranty, that'd be what I do (much riskier, requires opening up monitor, potentially creating more damage)

I tried to reply several times until i noticed that I am among the three users who needs to re-register hahaha

Thank you for your help, Chief. I've decided to go RMA, my monitor is still under warranty, hope the service is good in my region (hardly).

I looked closer later and found the white line on the left still exist @60hz, but much thinner so no blur caused. Loosen cable should be the reason, but still curious why higher refresh rates makes it blurrier

It won't be caused by a loose external cable (not DisplayPort, not HDMI, not DVI)
This is the type of artifact caused by a loose internal cable inside monitor ("LDVS ribbon cable").

Higher Hz causing left side to go blurrier is also a "loose internal LVDS ribbon cable" symptom. Sometimes displays are internal handled by multiple sections of display, which often manifests itself as vertical strips of the display. The leftmost strips appear to be malfunctioning.

But do an RMA. I do not recommend opening the monitor unless out of warranty...

Just an update, thanks to Chief. I went for RMA and they provided me a brand new monitor. Yeah!

Hey I'm sorry for reviving this old question but I also got this problem but with ROG Swift PG278Q. Same problem as the OP stated. I also observed that when playing games, if I set my refresh rate at 144 Hz and the G-sync is on, it flickers. But when I turn it off, the flickering is gone.

Hi Chief Blur Buster. This is an old thread but I have a similar problem with my Benq monitor XL2720Z.
The monitor started to fail on the left side (50%) lower (75%) part of the screen @ 100Hz. 120Hz and 144Hz was even worse. 60Hz was fine.

I made a test picture in paint. Scrolling the two lines up and down line for line shows one line getting thicker and the other thinner depending on where they are on the screen.

Link to youtube for video of my screen @ 144Hz.

There is also a line across the screen at about 25% down where the screen changes color slightly regardless of Hz. This is also seen in the monitor boot picture.

I disassembled the monitor but I damaged the touch screen connector (fixable). Don’t remove it from the bezel!

An interesting thing with this design is that the motherboard box is not attached to the back of the panel in any way. It´s hold in place to the back plastic with the VESA screws. The panel is hold with the back plastic and bezel.

I removed the following and used “Electro clean” (probably useless for this):
Both LVDS cables in both ends.
USB break board cable on the motherboards side.
The touch button cable in both ends.
The cable from the lower corner of the screen.

I removed both motherboards as well.
I then reinstalled everything but there was no improvement.
There is a metal cover at the top of the display mounted with three screws (where the LVDS cabels goes) that I didn’t remove. Maybe fiddling with that will make it work?
The capacitors on the motherboards looked ok but I didn’t test them.

How to disassemble the XL2720z monitor:
Remove stand (press the round button under the pivoting joint as it says in the manual).
Use a thin plastic tool between the bezel and the shiny part of the back plastic cover and pry it open (it was easier than I thought) but do not remove the bezel.
Place the monitor with screen facing down and the power connector facing you. Flipp the cover to the right.

Remove touch button cable and “USB” cable from the motherboard trough the holes in the steel cover. They are very hard to remove.
Remove cable from the lower corner of the screen (Easy)
Remove LVDS connectors from screen (tricky). You need to pinch the levers on each side together. You can loosen one side at a time.

Maybe Chief Blur Buster or someone can tell us what to do?
I will continue to use the monitor @ 60Hz in windows and 144Hz in games but I probably should by a new monitor.
