Setting it to the native sample rate of the game will skip the resampling step, but it doesn't matter, really. You need rather high-end speakers/headphones to hear differences and "golden ears."

Most integrated audio chips perform better at 48khz though. Some are so bad at 44.1khz that resampling to 48khz actually improves the sound even if the game's native rate is 44.1.

Unfortunately, it's not easy (or even possible) to tell what the game's native rate actually is. Most seem to be 48khz because that's the standard nowadays (especially on consoles.)

As @RealNC said,it truly won't matter because you will almost certainly not be able to tell the difference. The general conseus is though that if you Primarily listen to music then set it to 44100Hz as that's the native format of music. If you primarly watch movies and play games, set it to 48000Hz as that's typically the native format of those types of media.

The decisions of the 1970s that lead to the number "44100" is well explained in the "44,100 Hz" Wikipedia Page. Yep, there's a Wikipedia page about the number!

It's interesting to learn the history of why 44100 was originally chosen for music.
