The G-Sync module was a replacement for the whole PCB of the display initially. Not sure if that changed at some point. But I'm pretty sure that even if the gsync module only replaces parts of the PCB nowadays and doesn't completely take over everything, it is still fully responsible for overdrive, regardless of whether gsync is currently active or not. Obviously when gsync is currently active, the overdrive algorithm is changed in order to handle variable refresh. If gsync is not active, the optimal overdrive algorithm is used for fixed refresh. If gsync is active, the optimal overdrive is used for variable refresh.

(As a side note, I can't believe how it is possible that there's no footage of a modern gsync display being opened up and examined. One would expect that with the amount of youtubers and hardware sites out there somebody would have done it, like they do with virtually every other hardware. But nope, there seems to be nothing. Nobody is curious? Really? They throw a $1000 phone in a blender but non-destructively looking at the innards of a gsync display is a taboo?)

My guess was: all g-sync monitors are nvidia monitors on which they were allowed to glue the vendor label. Like the founders edition video cards, with asus msi stickers, etc.
