But why is it a dumb buy in your opinion? I don't see any LCDs with 160-180 Hz spec on the market and a capped 144 Hz is still more than a standard 60 Hz LCD...

Asus has also announced a 34 inch curved wide-screen display!

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/news_archiv ... _34_curved

This one offers 3440x1440 resolution with G-sync, but only at max. 75 Hz. I guess Displayport bandwidth is indeed the limiting factor, and everyone has to choose between resolution / refresh rate at the moment..

Same as the acer x34. Also 34x14 @ 75hz with gsync.

Also, thats pure liquid bullshit about DP1.2 not supporting more. Acer just showcased a 3840x2160 75hz TN monitor with dp1.2 @ computex. So having 40% lower resolution should let you get to 120hz or AT LEAST 100hz.

The REAL reason why its 75hz, is because the only IPS which can do 144hz is the one and only AUO Optronics made new 2560x1440 27" panel.

Any other IPS besides that one, is the OLD version of IPS, and will blur like mad if oc`d over 75hz. Thats why its 75hz. NOT because of dp1.2 limitation.

i've decided ultra-wide monitors aren't a good substitute for a big screen.

Scaling to big screen and moving back reduces eye strain exponentially. Ultra-wides don't facilitate sitting further back since they display the same scale. Meanwhile, those periphery pixels you never look at use a lot of GPU power for a little extra immersive "wow" factor.

Another beef i have is that it's completely pointless to have high hz monitors with low fps, yet manufacturers guarantee it with over-the-top native resolutions. A GTX980 might maintain 60fps consistently at these resolutions but not 144fps and definitely not 144fps @ 2160p which some monitors do. Not for a long time.

There is a general tendency now for manufacturers to go for that "wow" factor by pushing tech beyond it's practical limits. I think it started with the way Apple markets things. Amazing Apple computer watches that don't actually work. Also there are 4K and HDR tv's with zero to little content. mini-ITX cases with same size components crammed inside, monitor resolutions regardless of frame rate ect.

Have you ever used an ultrawide? seeing @ store doesnt count
And have you actually used a high refresh monitor?

This 144hz low pixel density, big ultrawide is a godsend. It will be comfortable as fuck. If only the price was appropriate.
Though i admit the Benq is gimped, because it doesnt have any form of VRR. Looking forward to the acer z35 with the same specs +gsync.

No I don't have an ultra wide and it's certainly your preference to take the fps hit. But the point was, your'e not going to get 144fps at that resolution, much less some of the higher resolutions they are pushing. Why are they selling 144hz panels at these resolutions? I'ts crazy impractical. Don't know what you mean by "comfortable" and what is VRR?

Ok, so I have bought and evaluated the screen. Here is my opinion so far (most important points):

- The screen is designed specifically for racing games, and therefore not suitable for normal desktop use (you miss too much vertical resolution as this is only 2560x1080 instead of 2560x1600).
- You can only do 144 Hz @ 2560x1080 over displayport. Keep in mind that for HDMI you can do 2560x1080 @ 60 Hz or if you want to do 144 Hz over HDMI you have to lower the resolution to 1920x1080.
- The input latency measured with Leo Bodnar tester is 19.6, 23.4, 27.1 milliseconds for upper - middle - lower parts of the screen (+/- 1ms depending on some settings). This is high for a computer monitor, but low for a TV (as expected, because both the technology and size are "in between" a normal TN computer monitor and an IPS TV). Important note to make is that this input latency is measured using the HDMI connector, since my displayport to HDMI converter does not work with the Leo Bodnar tester with this screen..
- In terms of motionblur it is not as good as a TN panel making use of Lightboost / ULMB. However, it is much much better than any IPS TV I have seen in game modus without backlight strobing. The Sony KDL42W80x with backlight strobing (LED Motion Mode) has less motion blur, but you gain a lot of ghosting in exchange.

Overall: the BENQ XR3501 definitely has the best combination of input latency /motionblur / ghosting I have ever seen in a screen this big in size and therefore I would recommend using this when playing racing games. However, the monitor is not suitable for desktop use, so if you want to be able to do anything else than playing racing games, you need a second monitor for that.

Some reviews from people who own the monitor can be found here:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1566153/benq ... wners-club

And Hexus has a nice review for this monitor now:
http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/monitors/ ... nq-xr3501/

They mention a 22.3 ms value for input latency. So I had another look at this with the Leo Bodnar tester, and found settings for AMA (Advanced Motion Accelerator, or BENQ's name for overdrive) in the OSD menu. In mode "Gamer1" (which is recommended for racing games by BENQ) AMA is normally set to "high". However, you have 3 options available: off, high, premium. Switching it off causes significant motionblur so I would not recommend that. I don't see much/any difference between "high" and "premium", except the input latency (I did the Leo Bodnar measurements more carefully this time).

Pre-set: Gamer1
Port used: HDMI1

AMA Off: 20.0, 23.7, 26.7ms
AMA High: 19.7, 23.4, 26.5ms
AMA Premium: 19.1, 22.8, 26.0ms

So on average I would say the input latency is approximately 23ms. I don't know how Hexus managed to get to 22.3ms, maybe some difference in other settings. But let's be honest, it doesn't matter that much. ;)

Yes Input lag measurement is not universal. Different equipment will give different results (I've seen slightly different lag measurements for the XL2720Z on different sites) but they are usually close to each other. And I wouldn't even be surprised if the video card factored into that. When you're at 20ms, a 2ms variance is pretty within the margin of error.
