JOLED is actually a panel maker like AUO, they sell them to monitor manufacturers such as ASUS (which uses one of the JOLED panels in their ProArt monitors). So there's a manufacturer-filtering-down process that also occurs too.

I have been waiting for OLEDs to come to gaming monitors. My personal holy grail consists of the following.

Black Blacks
Low\No Motion Blur
Low Latency
120-240hz (Or more if possible)
1080p
24-26"

And if I can wish, I would like it to be for around $400 :P

I read they would be releasing their own monitor branded "Burning Core", but it might be an wrong rumour, I have no idea! Thanks for the info. This will be my dream monitor.

Perrhaps, if they're able to do that.

House branded gaming monitors have happened (e.g. Computer Upgrade King, Massdrop, etc)

Though for a bleeding edge tech like OLED, it's more probable that a third partner is brought in.

For example, eSports teams have often teamed up with Razer, ZOWIE BenQ, ASUS, etc.

It's theoretically possible it's a 3-way collaboration between Burning Core, JOLED, and a traditional gaming monitor manufacturer.

Wait, that's cool.

How hard is it to develop an in-house monitor?

I wonder what the process would be to purchase a bunch of 0.5ms panels & then find a company to supply the electronics / monitor frame / assembling.

It's possible to do it as a one-man operation -- that's what Zisworks did with 480Hz. Most readers of Blur Busters now know I was the first mainstream website to test true-480Hz!

Realistically, you need about three or four employees to reliably pull off a house-branded monitor using an outsourced manufacturer.

There are several manufacturers that will manufacture house branded monitors for you. Best Buy commonly does that for "Insignia" but you can pull off becoming a house-brand manufacturer with just a 500 unit or 1000 unit manufacturing run nowadays.

Because if we put together a batch of 500 27" monitors @ 240hz with 0.5ms panels, we could sell them.

I've thought about it, but not this year.

Today, I'd be burning bridges with some manufacturers I currently have contracts for. I prefer not to compete with current active clients. I value the manufacturers I currently work with and I currently want to preserve my relationships with manufacturers.

However, I do provide monitor tuning services to multiple monitor manufacturers / AR / VR / screen makers
Now that said, if YOU decide to manufacture in-house gaming monitors -- contact me at [email protected] when you have an engineering sample already built (that problem, I leave to you). I provide overdrive tuning services, strobe tuning services, custom motion test creation services, private monitor testing services. I currently help multiple manufacturers and have no objection to offering my services to helping anyone (whether be a tiny Zisworks or a really big company) as long as there's no conflicts with any specific term-exclusives I may or may not have ongoing at the time.

On the OLED VRR subject, it should be noted those already sensitive to lower framerate judder on LCD displays during VRR operation (and film content playback), will likely be even more put off in this respect due to OLED's virtually instantaneous pixel response.

E.g. LCD pixel response causes blur (in varying amount depending on the given GtG of the panel) between high persistence (low framerate: <30 under) frames, and OLED has pretty much zero blur, which results in much more obvious judder/frame doubling effects in the same instances.

It doesn't bother me, but it's something a lot of users have to get used to when switching over from LCD tech; in this case, OLED's superior pixel response actually creates the perception of worse motion for some users more conditioned/accustomed to LCD motion, even though it's the opposite case; motion is actually vastly improved over LCD on OLED at the expense of it now doing nothing to mask the inherently juddery nature of lower framerate content.

Perception of lower framerate judder can be reduced via black frame insertion (which introduces flicker) or interpolation (rarely gaming-friendly, due to increased input lag, though with some know exceptions on certain displays), but never 100% (natively) fixed.
