If true, this could be a real game changer. 25% BFI at 4K/120Hz. So that means 2ms MPRT motion clarity at 4k 120 Hz smoothness all with OLED HDR picture quality. 13 ms input lag too which is tolerable.

If these sets will truly have 48 GBps HDMI 2.1 chips, wow this is huge news. These TV's will wreck havoc in the high end computer gaming display segment.

EDIT: re-reading it I believe they mean 25% BFI is the black frame is displayed for 25% of the time (~2ms) and the lit frame 75% of the time (~6ms). That would be how they reduce perceived flicker and maintain brightness over 50% BFI. So the motion clarity would "only" be 6ms MPRT, but still better than 8ms!

Confirmed full spec HDMI 2.1! As soon as HDMI 2.1 GPU's hit, a C9 OLED will be mine. Bye bye computer monitors.

Variable rate strobing has been experimented with GSYNC+ULMB simultaneous hack.
So it's possible to do, but require extremely steady frametime changes.

I don't think this TV can combine BFI and VRR, and also the BFI is only in 4.2ms granularities due to its refreshing architecture, so the minimum persistence you can get is 4.2ms on this OLED display. Still a big improvement from 2017 OLEDs!

Ya I think full sample-and-hold VRR smoothness will win out versus needing to lock FPS at 120 at 4K to get smooth 25% BFI. 25% BFI isn't that huge of a deal.

It's 25% BFI at 60Hz
It's 50% BFI at 120Hz

I understand that the BFI is in 1/240sec granularities.

In regards to these new OLEDs,

I think this is really fascinating, and I'm hopeful these 2019 lg oleds can also do HDR @ 4k 120hz.

Is this either assumed, or has it been confirmed? With HDMI 2.1 & VRR is HDR bundled in? Haven't been keeping too update on this aspect. I know on the 27" 4k GSYNC HDR screens, that HDR takes up extra bandwidth. Also, a Radeon VII would be the only viable option for a pc setup right?

As, I don't see nvidia having any incentive to do VRR over HDMI, given it would tank the market for their $5k 65" gsync displays.

imho, i think it's pretty clear new oleds would be ace. 4k HDR @ 120hz VRR on an OLED would be like the holy grail of gaming. Hopefully Synopsis & LG can deliver something competitive with nvidia gsync.

LG C9 TV's are now available to buy, a few people have already got them over on avsforums.

Rtings have done a review of the C9 but could not measure the VRR range, the 9 series OLED's do not support Freesync only HDMI groups own VRR system.

The LG C9 has a native 120Hz refresh rate, and it supports VRR, which is great. Unfortunately, it only supports HDMI Forum's new HDMI-VRR format, which is not compatible with FreeSync or G-SYNC. The only device currently on the market which supports HDMI-VRR is the Xbox One. We tested it for compatibility with the Xbox One, and it does appear to work, but only in SDR. If HDR is enabled on the Xbox and you are in Game mode, the screen flickers constantly. LG has confirmed that they are working on a fix. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to determine the VRR range with an Xbox One.

It is unlikely that HDMI-VRR will remain an Xbox exclusive format. If updated drivers or new graphics cards are released that support it, we will retest the C9 to determine the VRR range.

1080p and 1440p at 120Hz are supported, past LG OLED's only did 1080p at 120Hz. No way to test the 4K 120Hz of HDMI 2.1 yet.
