240Hz VA is here! ...It's a Samsung

Post by Chief Blur Buster » 11 Jun 2019, 15:42

Samsung just announced the C27RG50 gaming monitor (some media calls it the CRG5, but that's a series that includes a 144Hz monitor)

It's a 240 Hz curved VA monitor! -- utilizing VESA Adaptive-Sync that supports both FreeSync and G-SYNC (NVIDIA Certified).

E3: Samsung's First 240 Hz Gaming Monitor: Curved 240 Hz VA Panel

I know many of us like TN, but others hate it quite a bit. So that's great to finally see a 240Hz VA option -- something that is good looking for videos, movies, pictures, and will bring low-blur gaming.

Interesting Variable Refresh Rate Branding Situation

Unusually, this monitor is being marketed more with the NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible branding, rather than the AMD FreeSync branding -- despite supporting both. It appears to be a situation of getting certified by NVIDIA before being certified by AMD.

From what I know, the G-SYNC Compatible certification program is available to all eligible VESA Adaptive-Sync monitors capable of meeting the G-SYNC Compatible standard, even if manufacturers don't certify with AMD to gain the ability to use the "FreeSync" label.

I would never do 1080p but the development is interesting none the less.

According to them, this VA has faster g2g than some 240hz TNs which can't physically be true right...RIGHT?

There are over 60,000 GtG numbers for one screen, if you measure all source-destination color combinations in the entire 8-bit-per-channel space.

The fastest VA GtG colors are faster than the slowest TN GtG colors.

However, the VA GtG heatmap is massively worse than TN GtG heatmap. Dark-to-dark transitions are extremely slow on VA panels.

More tests will need to be made on 240Hz VA but it is possible that VA GtG has improved sufficiently for 240Hz. I need to feast my eyes on a 240Hz VA screen.

Hopefully they come soon as I'm ordering my first 240Hz monitor in June. :D

Not the same model as in the OP, but here's some early footage of the production models of the Samsung C27TG70, their 1000R curvature QHD 240Hz VA:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ4wsXnGauk

The more interesting footage starts 4:35. US MSRP is listed at $700, but will probably sell under $600.

Should make for some very competitive QHD 240Hz pricing towards the end of the year.

TFT review is now open for everyone and it shows that this panel is nothing special it's just like any other VA, a smeary mess.

Yep, I'd feel ripped off if I'd bought one of these new VA monitors, I've lost all interest in the upcoming G7. If the company making the panels is willing to stretch the truth to this level it doesn't inspire confidence. I was sincerely hoping for a breakthrough in the tech considering I was burned on a '200hz' VA a few years ago and the improvement I see in my new 165hz panel(Subjectively blurrier than a 60hz IPS/TN monitor but improved enough not to provoke nausea or mask the input lag advantages of a higher framerate.)

I do see some niche scenarios where you'd want this new VA(maybe Fortnite or Rocket League avoid enough of the dark scenes?) but a lot of people are going to walk into this blind and be put off higher refresh much like I was with the old Acer ultrawide. I mean that's why I went 4K for a couple years, before I discovered that VA smear was a known thing I'd concluded that high-refresh = blur = sick and that I needed a lower refresh-rate for comfort.
