Or perhaps this could be the matter of fine-tuning the panel?
Correct.

I've seen inversion appear/disappear with different scaler/TCONs attached to them.

For example, when I upgraded my ASUS VG248QE from non-G-SYNC to G-SYNC with the G-SYNC Kit back in year 2013 -- the inversion artifact behavior almost disappeared. Same panel, different chip driving panel.

Conceivably, these 10-year-old TN panels may very well be the same panel, with various refinements. At least in theory.

I wonder if there are differences in lagom test, comparing XL2546K 240Hz non strobed 4.16ms MPRT Vs 240Hz (and 100Hz with VT tweak to take 240Hz scanout) DyAc+ Premium 0.5ms MPRT. To check if short MPRT and longer time betwhen refresh, help hide pixel walking, like it do with motion blur.

For curiosity, i tested with the small screen of the old Galaxy S3 smartphone, AMOLED 60FPS/Hz VSync On non BFI. Pixel walking in all boxes, even with slow scroll speed. This confirm than even with a boost in GtG is not fixed.

Even knowing than pixel walk is not caused by slow GtG speed, and is related with voltage control, for this test over 240Hz monitor is very relevant GtG speed. I take box 1, one pixel distance betwhen colors, alternate pixel black (0-0-0) and grey (128-128-128).

Rtings XL2546K AMA Off
Image

I selected Off because is overshoot-free and have the best dark average. (0-0-0) to (128-128-128) is equal to (0%-50%) in this table, and value is aprox. 10ms, and (50%-0%) 1.2ms

Traslating ms to FPS. The max. framerate reaching target color is:

(0%-50%) 1000 / 10 = 100 FPS
(50%-0%) 1000 / 1.2 = 833

Even fixing pixel walk, GtG can't maintain color precision beyond 100 FPS. The more scroll speed over 100 pixels/s , the less color accuracy and contrast.

This is very important in one FPS focused monitor, where fast mouse turns are constanty done, overpassing 100 px/s constantly. Imagine a game with a texture made of 128-128-128 grey text over black background, and move mouse at 960 px/s

Testufo scroll text 240 px/s: https://www.testufo.com/framerates-text#pps=240&count=1

(0%-100%) 1000 / 5.9 = 169 FPS
(100%-0%) 1000 / 1.8 = 555

120 px/s should be Ok, but 240 px/s overpass 169, in theory even with DyAc+ Premium, white color following black text should be light grey. And more longer and dark trail, the more the speed is increased. You can confirm ?

Inversion artifacts change based on odd-number steps. For a panel with a refresh rate divisible by 120, this would be:

120, 360, 600, [...] pixels/sec
versus
240, 480, 720, [...] pixels/sec

But better to look at the "Pixels Per Frame", since that's universal for all refresh rates.

1,3,5, [...]
versus
2,4,6, [...]

A great inversion-artifacts amplifier is www.testufo.com/blackframes#easteregg=1. Select BFI motionspeeds that does even-number versus odd-number pixel speeds. Combining software BFI with hardware strobing, can amplify inversion artifacts on some panels, especially TN panels. With strobing enabled to amplify the inversion artifacts.

That's because inversion algorithm patterns are usually even numbered pixels width and heights. So motion in-sync versus out-of-sync with scrolling inversion algorithm, means different artifacts for different motionspeeds on some panels.

My XL2546K definitely doesn't suffer from pixel inversion according to Lagom's Inversion (pixel-walk) test.
Well, I don't really do any tests like this, I just either see or don't see freaking vertical lines appearing on the screen during motion, no tests needed! :) Pixel inversion artifacts issue must be one of the worst things any monitor can be affected with, if you ask me.

Update: I did the Lagom's Inversion Test you mentioned and it's quite heavily flickering on all of the boxes, so this is bad.
I read somewhere that those Lagom pixel inversion tests can actually trigger pixel inversion artifacts. There is a safe way to check if a monitor has those inversion artifacts or not. Basically, hop into a quick game of krunker.io (or any other game that has blank non-textured walls), then stare at walls while jumping up and down (https://streamable.com/9di6me). If your monitor has pixel inversion issues, pixels on the wall will look like they are stuttering or shivering.

I 1000% agree. Ever since I experienced pixel inversion artifacts, ghosting performance and image quality are no longer the first things I test after buying a new monitor.

If you're happy with everything on your XL2540K but those artifacts, I recommend returning it and buying another one. That issue varies from unit to unit.

Zowie USA just tweeted me this after I asked:" @ZOWIEbyBenQUSA
I know u probably can't say anything about it, but I am kinda desperate: Can u give any info about a TN 360 1080P DYAC monitor, is there any possibility we can see this monitor in 2022?"

The answer:

"hi, thanks for your understanding about i can't say anything for our future product plan :)
but we do keep developing new product, hope we can have good news to share in the near future ^_^"

That sounds promising maybe it's coming sooner than we think? After trying the Alienware 360hz and the Asus one I learned that IPS wasnt for me, so TN is the only way personally :)
