We already got 480 Hz at Blur Busters today: www.blurbusters.com/480hz

The companies are just catching up today.

But thanks for the remind, I'm going to break this news out!

UPDATE: The News Is Out!

BOE with another update on their progress, this time in announcing updates to the transistor array for their panels that seems to have broad applications for getting all panel types beyond 500Hz:

Why not? 500Hz is the extreme cutting edge, there will be compromises galore until at least a few panel generations at that refresh rate; manufacturing limitations, viable yield, adoption rate, etc.

There's likely only one panel type that can push this refresh rate without falling apart in motion, and that happens to be that 27" 1080p panel for now. It's better thought of as a prototype than anything else.

These sort of announcements only foreshadow eventual mainstream adaption. Even 360Hz consumer gaming panels still barely have fast enough pixel response times to keep up with their own refresh rate.

Baby steps...

Fascinating. I, for one, welcome kilohertz panels.

BOE is limited to 500Hz due to the Windows 500Hz limitation. However, I have a registry tweak available if BOE wishes to send an email to me, to enable 1000Hz in a Windows Insider build (access requires being a Microsoft Partner)...

We internally sketched an 8K 1000fps 1000Hz theoretical prototype that is buildable using today's technology. (though it would require an multiple-GPU computer to playback a lot of prerendered material).

We'll definitely get there within my lifetime (if I don't die early), but it'll be a long slog due to GPU performance not keeping up, and crypto madness slowing down consumer access to ever-newer GPUs -- not a win for refresh rate race.

For now the market is pre-recorded UltraHFR content when the first kilohertz 8K display demonstration arrives at a future NAB or CEDIA -- www.blurbusters.com/ultrahfr

is the auoptronic 480hz slated for late 22/early 23? tn or ips still? i was asking zowie about 360 back when the asus 360 was still pre launch/post tease (dat relatively extended period due covid and whatnot) there were rumors that tn360 was supposed to be out after testing done I'm guessing that's by now long posponed or all out skipped?

Yeah, dual cable DisplayPort 2.0 would hit 450Hz or 456Hz with bandwidth to spare at 8K via DSC, but are we even anywhere near the point of avoiding contrast modulation on a 27" to 40" 8K panel?

I don't think OLED will do the trick, I have no idea on QNED, and microLED may never be economical.

Meanwhile, 4K 1000Hz is almost within reach...

Do you need a DP2.0 Cable like this one, in order to use a 480hz - 500Hz monitor?

I go by the bitrate, not by version numbers.

There's no Hz limitation on DisplayPort nor HDMI, as long as you can fit the bitrate budget, especially with custom EDIDs/DisplayIDs now supporting negotiation of extremely high Hz numbers. Especially if the display and the GPU agrees on the plug-and-play timings, whether it be CVT or non-CVT formula.

1080p 480Hz 24-bit (8bpc) uncompressed requires approximately 25-30 gigabits per second at reduced porches.

You can fit 1080p 480Hz within DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4.

I was doing 540p 480Hz on DisplayPort 1.2 with my Zisworks display -- www.blurbusters.com/480hz

Nontheless, I do recommend a DisplayPort 2.0 cable, just to be safe, to maximize your capabilities (standard CVT formula + 10bit color depth), and ability to do 4K 240Hz uncompressed, or ~4K 750Hz with DSC. (The number I read somewhere is 749Hz with CVT formula, but I'd just go with manufacturer custom EDID, for plug-and-play even 750Hz).

But you should be OK for 1080p 480Hz or 500Hz with just a current well-built DisplayPort 1.4 cable.
