Does Freesync actually have more latency than G-Sync?

Talk about AMD's FreeSync and VESA AdaptiveSync, which are variable refresh rate technologies. They also eliminate stutters, and eliminate tearing. List of FreeSync Monitors.

Does Freesync actually have more latency than G-Sync?

I have seen a couple sources that state that Freesync has ~25% more latency than G-Sync, is this true?

Oh, that.

I'm familiar with the first two sources.

That's typically not due to VRR operation itself, but due to differences in display processing, firmware and driver implementation between monitor models/modes.

I.E. one FreeSync monitor can have lower overall latency than a native G-SYNC monitor, and visa-versa.

Glad to hear. Is there any reason why I would have worse latency performance using Freesync on an AW2721D compared to G-Sync? Obviously the VRR range will be smaller because the G-Sync chip won't be utilized, but I can live with that.

I'm not sure what you mean.

According to the RTINGS review, the AW2721D maxes out at 144Hz over DisplayPort with both G-SYNC and FreeSync when set to 10-bit. It only supports 240Hz with DisplayPort when set to 8-bit, thus the FreeSync mode should not have a smaller VRR range than G-SYNC mode, as it also supports LFC.

That said, if you're going to be using an AMD card in FreeSync mode on the AW2721D, is there a reason you're not going with the AW2723DF instead? I.E. future-proofing in case you buy an Nvidia GPU?

I already have a 3080 and the AW2721D and am thinking about swapping the GPU for a 7900XTX so I can use VRR on Linux. I just want to make sure VRR performance will be on par with my current 3080.

Where the monitor itself is concerned, fundamental VRR operation and LFC support should be comparable between the two modes, though I'm not sure whether variable overdrive is supported on that model in FreeSync mode (this is always the primary difference between the G-SYNC module and standalone FreeSync).

As for how well Linux replicates Windows OS/driver support for VRR, I can't say, since I have no personal experience with that OS.
