Dimming Vertical Sections at 60fps

Post by brogers » 19 Mar 2025, 17:39

I've recently noticed something very odd when my monitor (DELL AW2724DM) is at 60hz, whether from me setting it to that manually, or when playing a game capped at 60fps with G-SYNC on.

Occasionally, the monitor will dim in a stripe pattern, like alternating vertical sections of dim and un-dimmed. It's less noticeable when G-SYNC is off.

Reviews and RTINGs say that my monitor has local dimming forced on with HDR enabled, but I don't have HDR on, not to mention it doesn't look like the demo video on RTINGs site.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? I took a slow motion video with my phone, but I don't think it captures very well, it's only barely visible if you look hard enough. https://imgur.com/a/mr4DGm3

Well, it seems like this was actually a really easy issue to fix, lol. It turns out this is an issue with Stardew Valley specifically when playing at 1440p. Changing the zoom level to anything other than 100% fixes it.

Guess I should've verified in another game first, but weird that this issue did not happen on my 2nd monitor which is also 1440p.
