Dual Link converter to vga will help?

Post by simek1337 » 26 Feb 2015, 19:34

Hello Everyone at the begginin i would like to say im kinda newbie at all this stuff but...
I just bought a BENQ xl2411z v3, works like it should work i mean gr8 but the problem is im ussing laptop and here the problem started...
Ive read on forum to get the best experience i should use a dual link cable but there is no port for it in my laptop.
Im Counter Strike GO players and when im trying to put a high resolution like 1920-1080 - 120hz then show a error on my monitor saying "out of range" so ive checked all possible resolutions and there is only a few where i can put a 120hz like 1024-768, 800x600, and a few more, so the question started right now if im gonna buy a converter from dual link cable to a vga port there is any chance to get a more option for me like atleast 1280-960/1280-720 120hz when alrdy i can have like 1280-1024 in 120hz? did it change something or vga port is just too bad for that?

*Sorry for my terrible english hoply u gonna understand it.

No, a converter will not increase the amount of bandwidth that you can get through a VGA port on laptop or the VGA cable, regardless of whether there is a DVI converter at the other end.

Infact, I'm not even sure the conversion can go that way. Usually, you use the converter to go from DVI-I output from the GPU to VGA on the monitor side.

You've done OK to get the resolutions you have with those frequencies through VGA. You could try custom timings and things, but I don't think you'll get much better.

And you have been creating custom resolutions/frequencies with nvidia control panel?

What model of laptop do you have? Does it have VGA output port only, or does it have HDMI as well? You can get 1280x720 through HDMI @ 120hz. Infact you can get 1920x1080 @ 100hz as well. Some people with custom timings can get 1920x1080@120hz, but it is of course out of spec...

Im ussing a MSI GE70(kinda old but work) with a intel hd4000 on the board also have a hdmi 1.4 but im kinda afraid of ussing a hdmi connect since i was reading too much about imput lag etc.

Edit: Im not able to create a custom resolution via intel graphic phanel

Well I wouldn't worry about that. DVI and HDMI are both digital and they would have the same latency I think.

Try with the HDMI with 1280x720 @ 120hz, then see how much input lag you think there is

Ah damn. If it was nvidia control panel, it would probably be easy. I know that intel control panel is not very good.

Thats true... But im kinda wondering why in my intel graphic panel when im trying to change u know the resolution, hz and other stuff there is still option to change for example 1920-1080 100hz and when im change it, the error shows again (out of range) ive heard if there is a option what monitor cant use windows hiding it so idk why im see it and im able to change....

Hey, I was wondering if there is any advantage to using the HDMI port vs. the VGA port? Sorry for the stupid question, just don't know which I should be using.

IMO the HDMI. The VGA may give lots of colour wash out too, unless VGA is the only input the monitor supports
