Testing For Panel Lottery

Hi guys !

I was wondering if someone could kindly tell me the best way to test a OTB new monitor for Backlight Bleed, dead pixels, defects and any other of the things that would cause for a quick swap for a new one ?

Along with that advice, is it all possible to do with no computer ? Like does the monitor itself have a natural "black screen" ? Or better yet a stock color pallet swatch ? And if not, then is it mandatory (or best) the computer used to test it is matched 240fps to 240hz ?(cause its a 240hz monitor).

Keep in mind I am picky when it comes to these things, so I'd like the *best* most accurate way to do this, not the easiest or quickest. And the monitor of subject is the MSI Optix MAG251RX.

hate to tell ya but it's all random. most websites have a 30 day return policy. So keep that min mind. All u gotta do is put it back i nthe box and ship it, they will give u a prepaid shipping label.


But the general rule of thumb is this. Always buy new because my from experience of buying used, 12/12 of them had some sort of defect(which makes sense, why else would the original purchaser return it if there wasn't a dead pixel or backlight bleed)

took me FOUR attempts to finally win the panel lottery with my MSI MAG251rx. Two of them were "like new, item will come in original packaging" from amazon warehouse. BOth had a dead pixel so i returned it

the 3rd attempt, i bought new but it had backlight bleed(especially on the upper bezel which was a big no no).

FOURTH attempt, i won the panel lottery. NO backlight bleed, NO dead pixels, and my UNIT had that rare 125% SRGB(usually the range for oversaturation is from 108%-118%.


NEW with horrible backlight bleed. Returned it within 2 hours of receiving it

bought "used" but had a dead pixel. the BLB isn't bad(only on the lower right corner)

This is the MSI i currently use. It has no backlight bleed, the contrast ratio is about 1300:1, 125% SRGB, etc. It's BEAUTIFUL and i got extremely lucky.

Yea I was reading that in the other thread, which made me start this one on advice on how to test it for these things.

So any instructions ? Not on shipping or returning, but the actual testing process.

1) For BLB, That black screen you have there, how do you do that ? You turn it on with no signal going to it ? OR is that a 1920x1080 black color swatch that is being fed to the monitor via computer via 240hz/240fps ? Details please of what's most exact.

2) For dead pixel searching... ?? What is your exact process ?

3) any other defects/qualities to search test for ? If so... exact instruction details on the process please.

(and definitely, I'd never buy anything like this used. I'm a buy brand new only type of guy unless its vintage analog and/or tube audio recording gear or guitars/synths/etc... that's no longer made)

1) just search youtube for black screen bleeding test and wait till your mouse and youtube time bar goes away to see backlight bleed
2) There are many websites like (http://lcdtech.info/en/tests/dead.pixel.htm) just look through different colors for a dead pixel.

Is it worth buying a new/better cable? Or is the DP-Cable from the box fine?

1&2) So yes I need computer hooked up to it then ? There is no way to do this all confined to just the monitor plugged into the wall ?
(I got the color swatch slides on a USB stick, was hoping the monitor could play them off that without a computer ?)

3) If computer is indeed needed, is it mandatory its a 240fps feed to make this accurate (like what does a 240hz monitor look like if the feed is 30-60fps and a old crappy computer ?) Or can it just be any old computer for now and utilizing them websites you mentioned and these tests still be as accurate as any other way ?

This was also going to be another question I had for later. Wondering the same thing. But not for the initial tests, was wondering for displaying the absolute best final image once gaming, are high end cables (DP, HDMI, etc..) recommended ? What brand comes in the box ?
