The right monitor for Apex Legends?

Post by Jhaeva » 26 Jun 2023, 07:58

Hello,

I hope you can help with some suggestion and perhaps we can bust some myths about which monitor is better.

My Specs: rtx 4070, i7 13th Gen, 32.0 GB RAM and i mostly play Apex legends.

I am looking to buy a new monitor, with fast response time and less ghosting. Motion clarity and responsiveness is what i would go for without the use of Motion Blur option, since it works best with stable fps games, which Apex Legends isn't.

Resolution, i would go for 1080p because after i tested 1440p even with better quality and visuals, i feel that it not as suitable for me on competitive gaming as 1080p.
Refresh rate i would stay on 240 fps, since my GPU can handle it.

I have been doing research on three monitors so far:
- Asus Rog Swift PG259QN 24,5
- Dell Alienware aw2518h
- Benq Zowie xl2546k.

I only tested the Zowie so far, but that was when i had an rtx 3060 GPU, and i couldn't stay at 240 fps constantly. but even when capping the fps at 144 fps there was stuttering and lag.

I would really appreciate your suggestions regarding which would be the best or the right (balanced) monitor for a game like Apex Legends.
It doesnt have to be from the list above, it can be any suggestion.
Hopefully this will help me or someone else decide what will work best for this scenario.

Thank you in advance!

for apex i would recommend a monitor with no motion blur nor ghosting, since its a very "flicky" and fast paced game, and it would be the 240hz 1080p ViewSonic XG2431.

you can have a 360hz monitor but if the motion blur, ghosting and artifacts are too bad, then it doesn't matter

its a 24" so 1080 wont look as pixelated, and with PureXp enabled, it might be dim, but the 0 ghosting you get its a no brainer, the clarity is insane, i tried one today.

you can find pretty much the best review video on a monitor on YouTube by Optimum Tech of thos very monitor and it will explain EVERYTHING, also its the cheapest 240hz in the market i think

Another thing to consider is that the game is limited to 300fps by its game engine and will be very erratic. (bad for tracking and may cause stutters.)
To overcome this erratic behaviour capping the fps to 290 will give you the most consistent fps.

However this leaves 290fps while some monitors use 360Hz.
So a 240Hz monitor can save you money, but if you need 360Hz for other games you can just frame cap to 290fps or use QFT if VRR is not an option.

Do you really have issues with fps fluctuating below 240 after landing in Apex with your 13th gen i7 setup?

Fps fluctuations with strobing are not an issue as long as long as you can output 240+fps consistently.

The XG2431 is a no-brainer, it excels in every aspect: strobed clarity, colors, input lag, overdrive and strobing customizability, slightly better PPI than other 24.5" alternatives. It's simply the best 1080p 240hz to buy in 2023.

You also most likely want to avoid this first gen of 360hz/390hz 1080p IPS since they are not compliant with the 360hz refresh window.

Alternatively you could consider something like the Omen X25 (not the 25f) or the XN253QX.

Hi Jhaeva, i wanted the right monitor for Apex Legends too, this is my main game with Overwatch, and I've been fighting for found my monitor since 2020 [ YES ! ]
I have actually a 32gb 6200mhz Corsair Dominator Ram / I5-13600k at CPU LOAD LITE MODE 1 / RTX 3070 ASUS x NOCTUA EDITION ( will swap for a RTX 4070 maybe )

I've tried a tons of monitor specially for this game and i'm very sensitive too :
  • Sharpness of the image ( coating of the screen, resolution, sharpness settings etc )
  • Strobing quality ( crosstalk or input lag )
  • Overdrive smoothness ( fluidity or not / overshoot )
  • Visibility ( color vibrance / black equaliser performance )

I look at all these things, if one point is wrong, then it will necessarily be a bad choice (for me)

I'm like you for this concern, let me help you and tell you my personal experience that I had with each screen on Apex ( which can differs from your experience ofc ) :

ViewSonic XG2431 : This screen was the one I was waiting for the most, finally a good IPS strobing for a long time, finally a customizable IPS for good quality overdrive and strobing, in game the experience was quite different, it is not the worst screen that I have encountered but I absolutely did not like my experience with this monitor and I could not achieve anything personally, the implementation of the overdrive is very good and without strobing it is clearly not the worst student but I felt like a little lack of visibility, the 23.8" size is also quite strange, there is really only a tiny difference between 23.8" and 24.5" but this one seemed too small, everything was difficult to discern, the strobing added a feeling of input lag (confirmed by many users, who are sensitive to it when making configurations) and I didn't feel no real benefits, especially on Apex, I also tried very powerful QFT modes with the Toastyx tool, unfortunately the same, I didn't like the overall visibility and I didn't feel advantaged, I couldn't to have consistency in my visibility for my aim and my decision-making, then the osd was boring to use so I sent it back.

Asus VG259QM : This one is the most controversial monitor, I hardly know anyone who didn't like this one, everyone raves about its performance in strobing or even without, personally, in Apex Legends or in Overwatch, whether in 240hz or 280hz, I never found a point of agreement with this VG259QM and I had 3 (I wanted to try again to confirm my opinion)
Whether it's the overall low brightness (especially in strobing, I find it unusable) and the fact that the black equalizer is really bad (not enough for my taste) without strobing I found it quite basic but the colorimetry I always find it awful.

Dell S2522HG : Same IPS panel as the previous Asus if I'm not mistaken, I won't dbuy Dell/Alienware anymore, I hate Dell/Alienware, simply because unfortunately, I am too sensitive to the grainy treatment of their panels, I always find the image horrible, too grainy, not sharp enough, their black equalizer parameter always adds a gray veil and a weird veil of sharpness that I don't like at all and overall the implementation of overdrive is not excellent.

BenQ XL2546K : One of my favorites, the concern is that I apparently have alien hearing (when no, I have average hearing, so I don't understand) because they have a coil whine issues (a few users have already talked about it on Reddit and other sites) and so I can't play with their monitors, I had 3 XL2546K, 3 XL2566K, all had the same very unpleasant coil whine and by the way it was just unbearable especially when I wanted to chill on Pokemon with speakers for example, you can hear it.
The input lag of the XL2546K is excellent, not the best visibility on Apex because 1080p TN 25" but the color vibrance adds a real difference and an image that really separate the enemy from the scenery (which puts me off on a lot of IPS panel)

BenQ XL2566K : Not much to say, too expensive, erratic performance because Apex is limited to 300FPS (but you can limit the FPS as others have said !) But I didn't feel that the input lag or at least the keyboard/mouse feeling was perfect, oddly I preferred the XL2546K, except that if you play Overwatch the XL2566K can be excellent and also on Osu! (although it only has a Refresh Compliance rate only around 55% via Monitor Unboxed if I'm not mistaken, so not perfect) for me, for Apex only, it's not worth it.

I tested MANY others monitor like 1440p (a lot) but it would take me too long to detail everything, but if you want to know my experience on other monitors, don't hesitate!, today I want to go back to 1080p, it was a stupid move from me, the RTX 3070 is comfortable in 1440p but not in 240hz for Apex Legends , too much FPS drop for me and I prefer the responsiveness of 1080p with perfect stable frametimes.

The 4070 looks much better but still not enough to guarantee perfect 1440p 240hz for Apex Legends (even the 4090 slightly drops below 240FPS when there is a lot of effect so, well.)
Current temporary test : Waiting for the MPG 271QRX QD-OLED | Main monitor : actually nothing | I've had : 1080P : XL2546X / XL2566K / XL2546K / XL2546 / XL2540K / XL2746S / EX2510 / MAG251RX / NXG253R / MAG271CR / VG259QM / VG258QM / XG249CM / XG259CM / VG279QM / S2522HG / XG2431 / XG2405 / XG2702 / AW2518HF / AW2521HF / AW2720HF / 24G2U / Omen X 25 | 1440P : XV272UX / MAG274QRF-QD / 27GP850 / 27GN850 / AW2723DF / Omen X 27 / XG27AQM / XG27AQMR / S2721DGFA / Odyssey G7 / EX270QM / VG27AQML1A / XENEON 27QHD240 / XV272UKF / XV272UX 4K : U28G2XU2 / M32UC

Apex is not optimised, with my 3080+13600K if your close to two thermites it can drop to 190-200 FPS. (and I have a very controlled system)

There is also the Option of Quick Frame Transport QFT which you can set the monitor resolution to 200Hz and use strobing without the latency impact.

ViewSonic XG2431 - i was thinking about it, but 200 nits black frame insertion, no matter how good it is, is a no buy

I played Apex Legends for a long time with this monitor, you combine the 200 nits with the smaller size of 23.8 instead of 24.5 (there is a visible difference on a game like Apex Legends) also the input lag added by the strobing and actually it's a no go for me.

1. I see you have a long and respectable road on the monitor path. Including the VG259QM.
I am curious: Did it had the Qisda panel?

2. I see you went back to 1080P ( just like me, tried the P27AQN for a week )
Do I understand correctly u went back to the XL2546K?

3. My top 3 for Apex is: ( for now)
Mine is
1. VG259QM with the Qisda panel
2. XL2566K ( but not really worth the money)
3. XL2546K
| Now: ASUS PG248QP 540Hz. | Past : VG259QM with the Qisda panel/PG27AQN/XL2566K
