240hz monitor ghosting/double image artifact

Post by yuri » 09 Jun 2022, 14:53

Hello everyone,

So I recently go to pc, before i was on ps4 with a TN 1080p panel.

Now im on PC because i was done playing at 30fps that's why i have a rtx 3080 with a ASUS PG279QM a 240hz gsync monitor

However, I’m finding that motion feels weird? I noticed what appears to be some kind of ghosting/crosstalk like i was playing at 30fps on a 60hz panel..
Moving the camera on games feel not smooth at all, it's not tearing because G-sync works ( cap my fps below refresh rate at 237 on NVCP and activate vsync on NVCP too)

i don't think it's ghosting because on UFO test it's look really fine better than my old TN
it's not an overdrive issue i test all modes and it's the same.
NVCP and windows monitor are set at 240hz

maybe the Variable overdrive? array effect? GSYNC not working? i don't know..

i upload a video to show you the problem

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkiiUSPXsHM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx3dFOX5TJY

it's metro last light at 150 FPS gsync on.

cs go at 237fps does the same thing but a little less noticeable

Really appreciate anyone willing to read it through and help :)

Its a phantom array/stroboscopic effect, unavoidable at the moment. Solution would be at least 1000 Hz/fps display. In a fantasy world we need 10000+ Hz/fps to completely remove it. That's a lot of hertz.

There is something wrong with your monitor. Return it and try another unit.
That looks terrible, I doubt the UFO test on your monitor looks normal.

Doesn't look like something is wrong. PG279QM is a good monitor, fastest response times on IPS that I know of.

As said it's stroboscopic effect from finite framerates - stationary eye gaze on a moving background. You would see the same thing on all monitors. Much higher refreshrate and framerate is required remove it. That's why he said its less noticeable in csgo where he can run 240 fps on 240 Hz vrr monitor whereas in metro its 150. Some people are more sensitive to this effect than others. I hate it too.

Can you do the ufo ghosting test? Here are quick instructions for best quality. It would be nice to see PG279QM in action.

Well i don't think is a monitor issue because everything seems normal besides games..

Yeah no problem I post it tonight im at work actually,
Maybe its array effect but look strange that i never notice in 20years of console gaming... Except at 30fps

It's strange, because i Saw on the 2nd video more effect on the head from the left Guy...

Even with Blur set to max in metro Exodus i see transition black to white more than other transition..

I know what you mean, but I think his looks worse than normal. It's even very noticeable when he moved the mouse slowly in that 1st video.
Here's a quick video I just recorded. I'm not at home right now so, the monitor is a just basic Philips 60hz IPS. https://streamable.com/adhvy5 (Also, excuse the terrible 720p recording 😂)

Well my tn panel was like yours before i Switch to pc. What i got look really like i play with a framerate that doesnt match my refresh rate... Pretty odd

Im happy to hear you'll do the pursuits.

It's definitely that. But if u feel like it's more intense than usual check if in-game motion blur is cranked up.
