monitor recommendation (Asus VG258QM TUF vs Acer Predator XB253Q GW)

Post by lxshady » 12 Nov 2022, 14:26

Hello

I wanted to upgrade from 144 hz to 240+ hz but my budget is around 250€. I was thinking of buying one of these two monitors,
Asus VG258QM TUF and Acer Predator XB253Q GW cuz these one are on discount and they are right now at the same price (230-250€)

Im currently using Acer KG251 144hz.

What should I do? Should I buy the Asus 280hz TN one or the Acer 280 IPS one?
Thanks! :)
Any help is appreciated c:

The Dell S2522HG (240hz) is noticeably faster than the XB253Q GW in terms of response times and it also fit your budget, I would personally avoid the XB253Q GW and get the Dell if you want a 240hz IPS.

The VG258QM is a good TN monitor, it is not the fastest in its class but for the price that you mentioned it is good value.

Thanks for answering me, I really appreciate it.
Also I saw a new monitor (ASUS TUF Gaming VG249QM1A) and I haven't found any reviews of it.
Its a good monitor? It's pretty similar to VG259QM, is maybe better?

The panel itself is most likely better since as far as I know there's only 1 manufacturer for 1080 23.8"240hz IPS which is the same for the XG2431/24G2ZU(/E)/XG249CM and this panel is generally faster than first gen 240hz 24.5" IPS.

The real question is if the VG249QM1A has a good selection of overdrives because for example the 24G2ZU/E is not even close to the XG2431 in terms of response times while still using the same panel.

The S2522HG is probably still the fastest unstrobed 240hz IPS (with avg 2.7ms 10-90% gamma corrected).

Are there tests? I have had two 24g2zu and both had the best clarity in the UFO test of any IPS panels I have tried. In general, it looks almost like tn. I have one right now, today I purchased xv252qf and aoc in the UFO test is still clearer than it. I looked at reviews on xg2431 and without gating it is exactly the same. The Xg2431 has a better tuned strobe, that's the difference. On my 24g2zu the response time and input lag is less than the 390hz acer, however I prefer the 390hz acer. Why? Because 24g2zu has a very strong glow effect and I have constant discomfort from this panel. Acer came to me only today, and surprisingly, I see the enemy more clearly even at 360 Hz (390 can not be activated because I have 6600xt), this is not to say that it was significant, but this is the difference I was looking for. This really suits me better. I'm surprised that with less clarity (slightly) in the UFO test, the Acer has better clarity in games! In general, playing with the Acer is more fun for me, although the 24g2zu is a great monitor. The input lag on the acer seems more strong because my mouse is 1000hz. And yes, thank you axaro, part of your tests prompted me to decide to upgrade. Zowie 360 is very expensive in my country and I don't want to go back to TN after Acer.

As far as I know there are no response times measurements for the 24G2ZU, you can only compare Ufotests.

The XG2431 with the color profile set to Native + Ultra Fast OD is pushing the panel to its limits and you can even distinguish the 3 white dots on the ufo pattern (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8113&p=75239&hilit=Native#p75239), response times massively benefit from this trick as showed by Rtings response times results (https://www.rtings.com/assets/pages/q2a ... -large.jpg). I still have to see a 25G2ZU/E ufotest that looks better than this one, the afterimage when the AOC is strobing is a clear indicator of inferior motion performance when the XG2431 manages to achieve almost no afterimage when the off-duty cycle duration is around the same %.

Thank you antiblur, I must admit that after using the XV252QF for around ~10months I still consider this monitor a solid product, I highly recommend you to get your hands on a 4khz/8khz mouse, the difference compared to 1000hz will be very noticeable due to a big reduction in asynchronicity induced jitters.

I'm currently in the process of getting a Omen X25 since I want to compare the (reportedly) clearest 240hz TN on the market with this 390hz IPS. I tested 2x XL2546K units last year and I gotta say that although I wasn't impressed by unstrobed motion performance I still feel like I play better with TNs.
I still miss my XG2402, 2.9ms non-gamma corrected in a 7.2ms refresh window with the avg total transition at 6.9ms was truly something else.

Can you update about the omen x 25? Im thinking of buying it because im looking for a monitor with the best motion clarity without ulmb, but i saw a couple of ppl complains that the monitor have massive input lag.
Also how is the clarity of the VG259QM? There's a discount on it and im thinking maybe to go for this one.

There's no input lag issues on my unit, it feels very responsive with and without gsync.

Motion clarity is great, it can achieve the same clarity as the XL2546K with Dyac OFF but with absolutely no visible overshoot with Response Times set to lvl2, aside from the artifact aspect which does indicate that the Omen X 25 has better tuning, I don't see a massive difference in clarity.

I'm still wondering if I prefer it over the 2546K with Dyac, I can see that I play better with the Omen x 25 compared to the XV252QF(which was also the case for the BenQ) but I'm not sure that with the X25 I play better than with the XL2546K.

The questions that I'm asking myself is: Do I value a clear strobed image at the center of the screen over a crosstalk-less panel with less clarity?

Answering this question is not easy.

It's decent for being first gen IPS but I'd still consider the S2522HF and the XG2431 over the VG259QM.

Which games did you tried with it? And have you tried the ulmb? If so, what your thoughts on it?

I tried Apex, Overwatch and Warzone 2.

I got to the conclusion that I do indeed prefer the XL2546K with Dyac over the Omen X 25 but colors on the X25 aren't completely fcked like red/orange/magenta shades on the 2x XL2546K that I tested with multiple icc/icm profiles, there was no way to fix those colors.

There are moments when the X25 makes you hit shots that you would otherwise not hit with the XV252QF but there are also moments where the XV252QF outclass the X25. Maybe I've been too harsh with the Acer, going back to this panel after testing the Omen X25 wasn't as bad as I thought in terms of motion clarity and smoothness, all of this while having muuuch better colors.
